Sculpture overview

Sculpture is one of the oldest art forms known to man, and it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful. Paintings can depict trees, people, and inanimate objects, but only architectural sculptures can represent these things in a form that is true to life. At Stromberg, we know what it takes to make a sculpture great. Whether you want a 12-foot marble reproduction of David, a mermaid sculpture for your resort, or a sculpture of a tiger to boost school spirit, we can bring your ideas to life.

When you order your sculpture through us, you'll get a painstakingly crafted piece that will clearly display our attention to detail. We're not your typical sculpture manufacturer - we're a team of artisans, drafts people, and architects who aim to produce works that are both structurally sound and visually stunning. We offer a variety of finishes, and some of our materials can even be painted. If you're interested in getting the look of materials like gold, bronze, and limestone, ask about our fiberglass sculptures. We would be privileged to work with you to develop a beautiful architectural sculpture, regardless of the subject you have in mind.

Cast Stone Sculpture

With its rich, complex color patterns and varied textures, cut stone is a material that can be used to create stunning architectural sculptures. However, the techniques, tools, and time required to create a sculpture from quarried stone make it a difficult material to work with. Stromberg has managed to create a material that looks exactly like cut stone, but has none of the downsides. Here's what you should know about cast stone sculptures by Stromberg and how they compare to sculptures made of quarried stone.

Cast Stone is more durable: Our cast stone sculptures are stronger than those made from cut stone, and have a compressive strength of up to 15,000 PSI. Although it may be hard to believe, cast stone sculptures also weather better than those made of many types of natural cut stone.

Cast Stone offers more choices: With cut stone, you have to choose from the colors and textures the company currently has available. If you decide to go with a cast stone sculpture from Stromberg, however, you can simply tell us which color/texture combination you'd like, and we'll take care of the rest. In addition, because molds are used instead of chisels, hammers, and other traditional tools, more complex shapes are possible.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of cast stone sculptures is that they are virtually indistinguishable from natural cut stone. That's because we use real stone aggregate and simulate the natural stone formation process to produce our cast stone sculptures.

GFRC Sculpture

For many sculptors, concrete is the only material that will do. Depending on how the sculpture is fabricated, however, concrete can also be a difficult sculpture material to work with. Carving solid concrete by hand, for example, is a complicated and error-prone process. Some people who work with wet concrete apply it to a framework made of heavy aluminium wire, which holds the cement in place while it dries. Obviously, fine details and extremely complex shapes would be difficult using this method.

Stromberg's GFRC sculptures are cast using molds. That means we can achieve the kind of fineness in detail and complexity in design that are impossible with other methods. Facial features, a horse's mane, the lines on a turtle's shell - they can all be depicted in a life-like manner, without errors and inconsistencies. Because GFRC sculptures weigh only a fraction of sculptures made of pre-case concrete, all those shapes you thought would be impossible with concrete can be achieved with ease. As a sculpture material, concrete definitely has its problems - concrete sculptures kept outside can swell and crack over time. Corrosion is also an issue. None of these issues apply to Stromberg's fiberglass reinforced concrete sculptures, however. GFRC sculptures are low maintenance, and can withstand the elements without swelling or cracking. Objects made of GFRC can even be placed under water. With a number of finishes available, including one that lets you paint your GFRC sculpture any color you'd like, GFRC is a lightweight, aesthetically-pleasing, versatile, and durable material for your architectural sculpture.

GFRG Sculptures

GFRG is a unique material used by Stromberg to develop architectural sculptures. Quite different from traditional stone materials in that it is cast using molds instead of sculpted by hand, GFRG is a good choice of material in several situations:

You plan to keep your sculpture indoors: GFRG sculptures can be damaged by moisture. Therefore, they are suitable only for indoor use, and should be kept away from pools, saunas, and fountains.

You need a lightweight material: GFRG weighs only two to three pounds per square foot, making it lighter than plaster or stone. If you just plan to place your sculpture on the floor, this may not be a huge selling point. However, if your sculpture is quite large and you plan to place it on a pedestal, attach it to another structure, or place it inside a niche, a GFRG sculpture will probably be best.

Your sculpture has a complex shape or design: GFRG sculptures are made by pouring GFRG into a mold and letting it harden. This unique process allows GFRG sculptures to be molded into virtually any shape imaginable. Intricate textures and details can also be achieved.

You want to paint your sculpture: Request our special white finish, and you'll be able to finish your GFRG sculpture with almost any brand or color of paint.

GFRP Sculpture

Fiberglass, or Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer, has literally revolutionized the building industry since it was first developed in the 1930s. It is also a fantastic sculpture material, offering significant advantages over traditional materials like stone and bronze. Here's why you should consider a GFRP sculpture:

GFRP sculptures are strong and durable: If you plan to place your architectural sculpture outside, GFRP is a great choice of material. Stromberg's fiberglass reinforced products have stood up to extreme weather events - including category 5 hurricanes - without sustaining any damage. GFRP sculptures will not be damaged or corroded by acid rain, salt water, sunlight, or snow.

GFRP sculptures are versatile: GFRP is a material that can truly be used to make almost anything. GFRP sculptures are made by pouring the material into a precisely-crafted mold, so virtually any shape, texture, and size are possible.

GFRP sculptures are attractive and cost effective: GFRP is a fascinating material. In addition to being able to finish GFRP sculptures to match any color, we can also make fiberglass sculptures look exactly like bronze, gold, granite, and limestone. You get all the beauty of these materials at a fraction of the cost and without the associated problems. Suddenly, you no longer have to be a multi-millionaire to get that reproduction of The Thinker you've always wanted. Just bring us a photo, request the look of real bronze for your GFRP sculpture, and we'll do the rest.

GFRS Sculpture

Developed by our very own Lyndon Stromberg, GFRS is an amazing material that is well-suited for crafting architectural sculptures. GFRS sculptures have the look and texture of quarried stone, but are superior to architectural sculptures made of this material in several ways.

GFRS sculptures are lighter: Crushed stone is what gives GFRS sculptures their look of authenticity, but it's fiberglass that gives them their lightweight properties. Fiberglass reinforced sculptures weigh a fraction of those made of quarried stone, allowing you to place them virtually anywhere you'd like without worrying about the added weight.

GFRS sculptures are more affordable: Fiberglass is a much more affordable material than quarried stone, and fiberglass is a major component of all our GFRS sculptures. Because of this, GFRS sculptures are typically much less expensive than those made from cut stone.

GFRS sculptures offer more design possibilities: The lightweight properties of GFRS and the fact that GFRS sculptures are made using molds allow us to offer a virtually limitless number of designs. Many shapes are not possible with quarried stone because parts of the sculpture could be in danger of cracking under their own weight. GFRS opens up a whole new world of possibilities.

Marble Sculpture

Some of the greatest sculptors throughout history, including Michelangelo, have used marble to bring their works to life. When sculptures involve human subjects, pure white marble is a preferred material. Marble has several advantages over other materials commonly used for sculpture. Marble is quite translucent, which gives it a depth and a resemblance to human flesh that is lacking in some other materials. Perhaps the greatest advantage of marble as a sculpture material, however, is its workability. It is softer than other stones when first quarried, so it is easier to form the basic shape of the sculpture. Because of its fine grain, it is also possible to add very intricate detailing to marble sculptures. The material does have its disadvantages as well, the major one being that it can be damaged by acid rain. If this is an issue in your area, it is best to keep your marble sculpture indoors. We can develop a sophisticated and timeless marble sculpture based on your exact specifications. Our experts know the best sculpting methods for marble. We know the intricacies of how to produce sculptures of human subjects, and we never rush our work. Your marble sculpture will be perfect down to every last detail.

Until quite recently, the accepted measure of a painter's or sculptor's talent was how accurately he represented his subject, but this all changed when artists began producing abstract sculptures. During the early 20th century, the Impressionists were the first group to break the rigid rules of art. Other movements like Cubism and Abstract Expressionism followed, which had a profound effect on both painting and sculpture. Today, abstract sculptures can be found throughout the United States and the rest of the world.

Abstract sculptures are very different from any other type. Although the sculptor may draw inspiration from people, animals, or nature, the finished work will never closely resemble these subjects. When it comes to abstract sculpture, it's the piece's colors, textures, materials, and shapes that truly make it a work of art. Abstract sculptures can be composed of rigid geometric shapes, flowing curves, and repeating patterns. A number of different mediums are used to produce abstract sculptures, including bronze, glass, stone, fiberglass, wire, and metal. The sculptor's choice of material is crucial, as it will have an impact on the overall effect of the finished product. Although many may dismiss abstract sculptures as works that have little artistic value, there is no denying they have a respected and prominent place in the art world.

The popularity of animal and wildlife sculptures is easy to understand once we examine the bonds humans have with these creatures. Animals and wildlife have long held a special place in the hearts of most humans. We depend on animals for food, we take them into our homes as companions, and we admire their helplessness, their ferocity, and their beauty. It shouldn't be surprising, then, that animals are popular subjects for sculptors.

Any artist who decides to craft an animal or wildlife sculpture must make several crucial decisions. The first is whether the animal will be represented in a form that is true to life. Many animal and wildlife sculptures are crafted to look as realistic as possible. Other sculptors, however, take some artistic liberties to produce sculptures that are more original and fun. Purple giraffes, friendly-looking deer, and representations of mythical creatures like dragons and unicorns are all possibilities. Stromberg's team has produced a large number of animal and wildlife sculptures. Whether you're searching for a sculpture that will look exactly like your furry friend or a glossy fiberglass sculpture of a horse that will delight the little ones who come to your establishment, we have the tools, techniques, and expertise to deliver the exact animal or wildlife sculpture you want.

The Ancient Greeks and Romans were the first to produce what we now call classical sculptures, a style that is still popular today. These sculptures, many of which are still considered some of history's greatest masterpieces, differed from earlier works in several important ways. Classical sculptors were concerned with depicting the human form in a lifelike and realistic way. A major characteristic of classical works was contrapposto. Subjects were depicted as having most of their weight resting on one foot, which gave the figure a more relaxed and less awkward appearance. Classical sculpture also depicted humans in a greater number of lifelike and natural poses. Aphrodite de Milos and The Marathon Youth are classical Greek sculptures that are still admired by countless people today. During the Italian Renaissance, sculptors once again began crafting classical works. Donatello and Michelangelo crafted classical sculptures in this period, and it was during this time that Michelangelo crafted David, one of history's most renowned works of art.

If you want a classical sculpture for your hotel lobby or the niches of your Roman-themed casino, Stromberg is the company you can count on to deliver amazing results. Using our extensive knowledge of classical sculpture, we can craft a work that depicts a modern subject and complies with the rules of classical sculpture that were established all those centuries ago. We can also produce reproductions of the world's greatest classical sculptures that are sure to delight you and your guests. Count on us to deliver museum quality classical sculptures that will be everything you imagined and more.

A custom sculpture is an exquisite addition to building interiors and exteriors. Perfectly-crafted sculptures can serve as conversation pieces, focal points, and subtle enhancements to an already fabulous decor. The design experts at Stromberg believe that everybody should get the exact sculpture they want, which is why they specialize in crafting custom sculptures for their many clients. Because they are produced based on the clients' instructions and wishes, custom sculptures are one-of-a-kind pieces that you simply won't find anywhere else. They can be figurative or abstract, tiny or massive, understated or daring.

One of the concerns many individuals have when they decide to have a custom sculpture produced is that they won't be able to give instructions that are sufficiently detailed. As long as the individual is dealing with a company that specializes in custom works, however, this shouldn't be a concern. The design team at Stromberg, for example, can work with drawings, photographs, and even written instructions to produce totally original and completely captivating custom sculptures. Stromberg is the company that can bring virtually any idea to life.

In most cultures throughout the world, those who have lost loved ones seek out ways to honor them and their memory, and many use sculpture to achieve this goal. Other people purchase expensive headstones, lay flowers on graves, and make an effort to keep headstones clean and free of debris. Placing figurative or memorial sculptures around gravesites, however, is a common and very tasteful way to honor a loved one that has passed on. Popular subjects for figurative sculptures that are used to pay tribute to lost relatives or friends are angels and religious figures like Jesus and the Virgin Mary. Another option is to have the deceased memorialized through sculpture. Those who visit the burial site can take comfort in admiring the lifelike figurative sculpture that depicts the dearly departed, and in knowing they will never be forgotten.

We can craft figurative or memorial sculptures that will honor all of the precious people in your life that you have lost. We can produce an exquisitely-crafted memorial sculpture from a picture or a drawing, or you can choose a figurative sculpture of an angel or other religious figure that will watch over your loved one. Help keep those you've lost in your heart and your memory with a breathtaking memorial sculpture by Stromberg.

Housing some of the planet's most captivating and beautiful creatures, the world's mysterious oceans and all of the creatures they contain are wonderful sources of inspiration for many sculptors. Playful dolphins, fierce sharks, majestic whales, and even extremely simple creatures like coral are all fitting subjects for marine-themed sculptures. Marine sculptures can be crafted out of a variety of materials, including stone and fiberglass. While many are a solid color, others incorporate different hues to give the marine sculpture a more realistic and eye-catching appearance. Like the creatures of the deep, marine sculptures are breathtaking and absolutely gorgeous.

Stromberg has developed marine sculptures for several clients, including The Atlantis Resort. Here you'll find the world's largest GFRP sculpture depicting two marlins, as well as several 20-foot seahorse sculptures. We can craft massive freestanding whale sculptures, or help you incorporate marine sculptures into the design of your outdoor or lobby fountain. Celebrate the world's aquatic plant and animal life and delight your guests at the same time with marine sculptures by Stromberg.

Events and people that have had major impacts on the country's history are written about in books, they are the subjects of countless documentaries and movies, and they are also often immortalized through sculpture. Some of the most impressive and massive sculptures in the world are considered monumental sculptures. These works honor important historical figures, pay tribute to soldiers that made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, and help ensure people will never forget the events that changed the course of history. Washington, D.C. contains some of the most well-known examples of monumental sculpture. Past presidents like Jefferson and Lincoln have sculptures devoted to their memory, the Emancipation Statue is a monumental sculpture celebrating the end of slavery in the United States, and the Vietnam War Memorial depicts soldiers in battle in an effort to pay tribute to their sacrifices. Many other areas of the world also use monumental sculpture as a way to preserve and reflect on the history of their land, and Stromberg is able to craft custom monumental sculptures or make seamless repairs to any you may want to restore and maintain.

As hard as it may be to believe, sacred and religious sculptures, still an integral part of many faiths, were first developed by the Ancient Egyptians. All those centuries ago, the Egyptians crafted modestly-sized religious sculptures that were placed in tombs. They also constructed the sphinxes, sacred sculptures that were absolutely massive. Since that time, many sculptures to honor gods and biblical events have been crafted throughout the ages. Sacred sculptures can be found in many Christian churches, with the Virgin Mary, Jesus, angels, and saints being common and familiar subjects. Many religious sculptures also depict important biblical events like the birth of Christ and the Crucifixion. Other religions, such as Buddhism and Hinduism, use sculpture as a way to pay respect to their gods. Outside of places of worship, sacred and religious sculptures can often be found in graveyards, where they serve to provide comfort and solace to the faithful. At one time, almost all sculptures were religious in nature. As the Church's power over society lessened, sculptors were free to develop works depicting a wider range of subjects. Sacred sculptures are still very important to devout members of society, however, and Stromberg is pleased to offer religious sculptures that are suitable for people of all faiths.

The Wild West may no longer exist, but the appeal and popularity of Western sculptures and other memorabilia inspired by life on the American frontier live on. From Western movies, to novels, to Western-themed amusement parks, the cowboy and his trusty horse still hold a special place in American culture. It shouldn't be too surprising, then, that Western-themed sculptures are also quite popular. The perfect addition to Western-themed restaurants, hotels, and parks, Western sculptures can give your establishment that much-needed Old West flare. Western sculptures can depict the most famous scene of the Wild West era - the cowboy riding his horse - but there are many other possibilities. Sculptures of cowboy hats, cows, western boots, and wagons are all fitting subjects for Western sculptures as well.

If you're looking for some ideas for Western sculptures, or you have something specific in mind, contact the design experts at Stromberg. We can produce Western sculptures that will enhance the appeal of your establishment and help transport visitors and guests back in time.
