Cast Stone Sculpture

With its rich, complex color patterns and varied textures, cut stone is a material that can be used to create stunning architectural sculptures. However, the techniques, tools, and time required to create a sculpture from quarried stone make it a difficult material to work with. Stromberg has managed to create a material that looks exactly like cut stone, but has none of the downsides. Here's what you should know about cast stone sculptures by Stromberg and how they compare to sculptures made of quarried stone.

Cast Stone is more durable: Our cast stone sculptures are stronger than those made from cut stone, and have a compressive strength of up to 15,000 PSI. Although it may be hard to believe, cast stone sculptures also weather better than those made of many types of natural cut stone.

Cast Stone offers more choices: With cut stone, you have to choose from the colors and textures the company currently has available. If you decide to go with a cast stone sculpture from Stromberg, however, you can simply tell us which color/texture combination you'd like, and we'll take care of the rest. In addition, because molds are used instead of chisels, hammers, and other traditional tools, more complex shapes are possible.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of cast stone sculptures is that they are virtually indistinguishable from natural cut stone. That's because we use real stone aggregate and simulate the natural stone formation process to produce our cast stone sculptures.

GFRC Sculpture

For many sculptors, concrete is the only material that will do. Depending on how the sculpture is fabricated, however, concrete can also be a difficult sculpture material to work with. Carving solid concrete by hand, for example, is a complicated and error-prone process. Some people who work with wet concrete apply it to a framework made of heavy aluminium wire, which holds the cement in place while it dries. Obviously, fine details and extremely complex shapes would be difficult using this method.

Stromberg's GFRC sculptures are cast using molds. That means we can achieve the kind of fineness in detail and complexity in design that are impossible with other methods. Facial features, a horse's mane, the lines on a turtle's shell - they can all be depicted in a life-like manner, without errors and inconsistencies. Because GFRC sculptures weigh only a fraction of sculptures made of pre-case concrete, all those shapes you thought would be impossible with concrete can be achieved with ease. As a sculpture material, concrete definitely has its problems - concrete sculptures kept outside can swell and crack over time. Corrosion is also an issue. None of these issues apply to Stromberg's fiberglass reinforced concrete sculptures, however. GFRC sculptures are low maintenance, and can withstand the elements without swelling or cracking. Objects made of GFRC can even be placed under water. With a number of finishes available, including one that lets you paint your GFRC sculpture any color you'd like, GFRC is a lightweight, aesthetically-pleasing, versatile, and durable material for your architectural sculpture.

GFRG Sculptures

GFRG is a unique material used by Stromberg to develop architectural sculptures. Quite different from traditional stone materials in that it is cast using molds instead of sculpted by hand, GFRG is a good choice of material in several situations:

You plan to keep your sculpture indoors: GFRG sculptures can be damaged by moisture. Therefore, they are suitable only for indoor use, and should be kept away from pools, saunas, and fountains.

You need a lightweight material: GFRG weighs only two to three pounds per square foot, making it lighter than plaster or stone. If you just plan to place your sculpture on the floor, this may not be a huge selling point. However, if your sculpture is quite large and you plan to place it on a pedestal, attach it to another structure, or place it inside a niche, a GFRG sculpture will probably be best.

Your sculpture has a complex shape or design: GFRG sculptures are made by pouring GFRG into a mold and letting it harden. This unique process allows GFRG sculptures to be molded into virtually any shape imaginable. Intricate textures and details can also be achieved.

GFRP Sculpture

Fiberglass, or Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer, has literally revolutionized the building industry since it was first developed in the 1930s. GFRS Sculpture

Developed by our very own Lyndon Stromberg, GFRS is an amazing material that is well-suited for crafting architectural sculptures. GFRS sculptures have the look and texture of quarried stone, but are superior to architectural sculptures made of this material in several ways.

GFRS sculptures are lighter: Crushed stone is what gives GFRS sculptures their look of authenticity, but it's fiberglass that gives them their lightweight properties. Fiberglass reinforced sculptures weigh a fraction of those made of quarried stone, allowing you to place them virtually anywhere you'd like without worrying about the added weight.

GFRS sculptures are more affordable: Fiberglass is a much more affordable material than quarried stone, and fiberglass is a major component of all our GFRS sculptures. Because of this, GFRS sculptures are typically much less expensive than those made from cut stone.
