Composite columns are an inspired creation of the late Roman period. These amazing architectural structures basically have richly decorated Corinthian capitals (tops of the columns) and large Ionic scrolls on each of the capital corners. These curly scrolls and volutes have echinus leaves alternating with oval shaped serrated leaves between them.

A little over 50 years ago, a new material for creating columns was introduced. Known as fiberglass reinforced polymer, it represented advancement in the plastics industry. GFRC Columns

GFRC, or, glass fiber reinforced concrete, contains Portland cement, fine aggregate and glass fibers along with polymers. GFRS Columns

GFRS (Glass Fiber Reinforced Stone) was actually invented here at Stromberg's, in the 1980's. It is very much like fiberglass in just about every respect, except that the surface of GFRS is made of stone aggregate and is bound together by polymers. Doing this gives your Composite column the look, feel, and character of carved stone, but at only a fraction of the weight. Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum (GFRG) is a relatively new material concept. But, don't let its age fool you. GFRG, which is primarily composed of two raw materials (high density alpha-based gypsum and glass fiber reinforcement), delivers because it is flame resistant, easy to install, and gives you great style and finish selection. For example, GFRG can be cast in to virtually any shape, and it is available in white so that it is easily finished with just about any paint.

Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) is considered to be a staple material in the building industry. You can feel confident about using GFRP for both your interior and exterior architectural columns. Your Doric columns that are made of this material will be extremely strong, lightweight, environmentally resistant, and durable. The creation of Cast Stone is a very refined manufacturing process that results in a material that simulates natural cut stone extremely well. Roman Corinthian Columns - Truly An Elegant Choice!

Considered by many to be the most elegant and elaborate of all column architecture, the Roman Corinthian column definitely earns its great reputation. Usually slender in form, with decoratively ornate leaf designs gracing the top of each column, Roman Corinthian columns make both a beautiful and grand statement wherever they are found.

Besides the fact that these columns are decorated with two tiers of eight stylized acanthus leaves, this particular style of column is also recognized because it usually has a column shaft that is ten times the size of the bottom diameter. This shaft can be either plain or fluted.

GRG Column Covers and Column Wraps

Glass fiber reinforced gypsum column covers

Stromberg GRG column covers are easy to design, install and finish.

Design Stromberg column covers are available in virtually any size, texture or style. Install Fast installation using joint compound or drywall adhesive with drywall screws. Finish Paint or finish similar to gypsum board. The smooth, quality surface provides a smooth base for paint or other finish.

Stromberg GRG column covers are available in a range of sizes or are custom made to your design. Sections are typically 8' to 12' in length with a recess at each end for tape and bed (similar to gypsum board tape and bed).

GRG Column Cover Installation

Non combustible and lightweight GRG column covers are typically installed with screws and adhesive. After attachment, the joints between the sections are taped and floated together to create a monolithic, seamless appearance. The column covers are then ready for paint or other finish options. Installation details are provided with the shop drawings.

General Guidelines for GRG Column Cover Installation

• GRG should be stored in an enclosed area and protected from weather.
• Fasteners are standard self tapping or self drilling drywall screws and drywall type adhesive such as PL 100
• Joints in GRG column covers are finished similar to gypsum board in according to ASTM C-475 guidelines. Fiberglass tape is recommended.
• Column covers are typically made to length, but if cutting is required, a dry diamond saw blade or a fine toothed carbide tipped metal blade is recommended. As with all gypsum, fiberglass or construction materials avoid breathing the dust. (See installation instructions).
• When dry and dust free, prime and paint or finish the GRG column covers as desired.
• As with any gypsum product, GRG column covers that are to receive a semi gloss or gloss finishes will require additional preparation of the surface.
