Surface Retardant

Sika® Rugasol® S is a spray applied, water soluble liquid, formulated to retard the set of surface mortar in concrete to enable the aggregate to be exposed. Sika® Rugasol® S is green in color to allow easy identification of areas where it has been applied and ensure a uniform coating is obtained.

Usage

Sika® Rugasol® S may be used to obtain an architectural finish on concrete slabs by exposing the natural color and texture of the aggregates. The rough finish obtained from this method may be used as a mechanical key for the subsequent lifting or rendering of the concrete.

Shelf Life

Shelf life in original, unopened container is 2 years, when stored in dry warehouse conditions between 50 °F and 80 °F (10-27 °C).

Storage Conditions

Sika® Rugasol® S should be stored at above 40 °F (5 °C) thoroughly to return to normal state before use.

Application Steps

APPLICATION

Apply Sika® Rugasol® S with a low pressure spray immediately after screeding when concrete has lost its sheen. The normal recommended rate of application of Sika® Rugasol® S is 200 sq. ft. per gallon (4.9 sq. meter per liter). All finishing work must be completed prior to the application of Sika® Rugasol® S. Any mechanical floating or finishing after application will produce excessive and irregular depths of retardation.
Cover with wet burlap or plastic sheet to prevent surface from drying out.

Architectural finish: For an architectural finish, seed surface with additional aggregate and float it to the surface before applying Sika® Rugasol® S.

Exposing aggregate: Within 12 to 14 hours after application, use a low pressure garden hose and stiff broom to remove the retarded surface mortar. Do not use excessive force in removal since this may undermine the exposed aggregate profile.

Effect of high temperatures: Accelerating admixtures, heated concrete, steam curing, and hot weather all reduce the effectiveness and dependability of Sika® Rugasol® S.

Compatibility with other admixtures: Sika® Rugasol® S is compatible with all admixtures in the Sika product range. Sika recommends when other products are used, that field trials be carried out.

Cleaning: Any Sika® Rugasol® S remaining on the dried formwork can easily be removed by scrubbing with water and a wire brush. Any material that has not been in contact with the concrete should be neutralized with cement slurry or soda solution before removal. Form work to be reused must be cleaned thoroughly.
