In Ground Locking J-Box Cover

Most in-ground boxes have one weak spot: a lid that lifts right off. This one doesn’t. The EMT In-Ground Locking J-Box Cover bolts a heavy-duty steel lid to your box and locks it behind four steps that have to be beaten in order. The lid stops being the easy way to the wire. Works on in-ground concrete boxes set in concrete or dirt.

Key Features
  • Four-Layer Security System - Sequential Defense Against Unauthorized Access
The in-ground locking j-box cover uses four independent security layers that a thief must defeat in sequence. First, two proprietary keyed bolts lock the cover flap shut. Next, the closed flap conceals the puck lock completely. Behind the flap, the keyed puck lock conceals the bottom bolt inside a shrouded steel housing. Finally, the heavy-duty stainless steel bottom bolt secures the lid to the base. Together, these four layers make unauthorized access significantly more time-consuming and difficult than any standard replacement lid.
  • Proprietary Keyed Flap Bolts - First Line of Defense
Two proprietary keyed bolts secure the cover flap flush to the lid. These bolts use the same proven keyed bolt system as the EMT tamper-resistant cover line - sized up for the demands of in-ground j-box applications. The driver required to remove them is not available at hardware stores. Without the driver, the flap cannot open and the puck lock beneath it cannot be accessed.
  • Integrated Keyed Puck Lock - Shrouded Steel Housing Resists Bolt Cutters
The front keyed puck lock sits inside a shrouded steel housing that blocks access to the shackle by bolt cutters. Furthermore, the puck lock is only accessible after the cover flap is opened, which itself requires the proprietary driver. Once locked, there is no exposed hardware, no accessible bolt head, and no easy point of entry for thieves.
  • Heavy-Duty Stainless Steel Bottom Bolt - Lid Secured to Base
The heavy-duty stainless steel bottom bolt threads through the lid into the base, securing the lid firmly in place. The bolt is fully concealed behind the puck lock housing and can only be accessed after defeating the three security layers above it. Additionally, stainless steel construction resists corrosion in the wet, underground environments these boxes operate in.
  • Dual Installation System - Concrete and Dirt Applications Supported
The base plate attaches directly to the j-box using concrete screws for hard-surface installations. For dirt or soft ground installations, the included ground anchor drills into the ground and attaches to the base - providing a secure hold where concrete screws alone are not sufficient. Both installation types are supported with the same unit. Moreover, the ground anchor ships are included with every order at no additional cost.
  • Heavy-Duty Stainless Steel Construction with Powder-Coat Finish
Every component - base plate, locking lid, bottom bolt, and flap bolts - is made of heavy-duty stainless steel with a powder-coated finish. Consequently, the system resists rust, corrosion, and UV exposure in the demanding above-ground and below-grade environments in which in-ground j-boxes operate year after year.
  • Keyed Alike Puck Lock Option Available
Manage an entire site or a portfolio of j-boxes with a single puck lock key. Order multiple units with keyed alike puck locks - ideal for municipalities, property managers, and contractors securing multiple j-box locations across a property or portfolio. Simply contact EMT when ordering to request keyed alike configuration.
  • Three Stock SKUs - Small, Medium, and Large Opening Sizes
Three ready-to-order stock SKUs cover the most common in-ground j-box opening sizes. Small/medium SKUs fit openings of 9-3/4″ × 15-1/4″ and 10-3/4″ × 20-7/8″ at $749.99. The large SKU fits openings of 17-7/8″ × 30-5/8″ at $1,129.99. Additionally, custom fabrication is available for any opening not matched by a stock SKU.

Description
How the In-Ground Locking J-Box Cover works

A standard in-ground lid usually just sits in place. This cover is a two-piece system: a base that attaches to your box or the ground, and a locking lid. To open it, someone has to get through four steps in order:

  1. Keyed flap bolts. Two keyed stainless steel bolts hold a flap shut. They need a special driver.
  2. Flap. With the bolts out, the flap lifts to show the lock. Closed, it sits flush with no edge to pry.
  3. Puck lock. A keyed lock in a steel housing covers the main bolt.
  4. Main bolt. A stainless steel bolt runs through the lid into the base. It’s only reachable after steps 1 to 3.
Pick a size or have one made

Each size listed above is the inside of the box where the lid sits, the same measurement the Size Guide walks you through. If one matches your box, order it. Most in-stock orders ship the next business day, and sizes not in stock generally ship in 4-6 weeks. Box not listed? We’ll make a cover to fit it from your measurements and photos.

Installs in concrete or dirt

Concrete or hard surface: the base attaches to the box with concrete screws.
Dirt or soft ground: drill in the included ground anchor and attach the base to it.
Then set the lid, tighten the main bolt, add the puck lock, close the flap and tighten the flap bolts. Standard tools, no welding.

What’s included

Heavy-duty powder-coated steel base plate and locking lid, ground anchor, concrete screws, stainless steel main bolt, two keyed stainless steel flap bolts, puck lock with keys, and the flap-bolt driver.

Who uses it

Cities and public works, DOT and traffic departments, electrical contractors, property and facility managers, and electrical distributors protecting in-ground electrical boxes.

Applications
Compatible Applications

The in-ground locking j-box cover serves in-ground electrical junction boxes in both concrete and dirt installations where standard lids provide no meaningful theft deterrence. If your j-box opening matches one of the stock SKUs above - or you can provide outside opening dimensions for a custom order - this is the right product. Below are the most common j-box types and environments where this cover delivers results.

J-Box Types
  • Small / Medium in-ground j-boxes - Stock SKU IGL9-3/4X15-1/4R fits openings of 9-3/4″ × 15-1/4″. Stock SKU IGL10-3/4X20-7/8R fits openings of 10-3/4″ × 20-7/8″. Both ship at $749.99.
  • Large in-ground j-boxes - Stock SKU IGL17-7/8X30-5/8R fits openings of 17-7/8″ × 30-5/8″. Ships at $1,129.99.
  • Non-standard openings - Custom fabrication available for any j-box opening not matched by a stock SKU. Provide outside opening dimensions and installation environment to initiate a custom order.
Installation Environments
  • Concrete and hard surface installations - Base attaches directly to the j-box with concrete screws. Suitable for sidewalk, pavement, and hardscape environments.
  • Dirt and soft ground installations - Included ground anchor drills into the ground and attaches to the base, providing a secure hold where concrete screws alone are not sufficient.
Infrastructure & Municipal Applications
  • Streetlight and roadway lighting j-boxes in sidewalk and pavement installations
  • Traffic signal and DOT electrical junction boxes
  • Transit authority and bus corridor electrical boxes
  • Park, recreational area, and public space electrical infrastructure
