Lintels overview

Like so many other architectural elements that are still extensively used today, lintels were first developed and used by the Ancient Greeks. At that time, lintels served a very practical purpose. When holes were made in buildings for windows and doors, the strength of these areas was reduced. Lintels, the horizontal beams placed above these openings, were necessary to support the structure.

Although the lintels that are seen on buildings today do provide at least some support, they are valued more for their decorative and aesthetic attributes. Like other elements such as window surrounds and medallions, lintels can provide variety to a building's exterior design. A white GFRC lintel that protrudes above the windows of a brick restaurant provides a completely different color and texture to what would otherwise be a monotone and relatively flat exterior. If you're interested in purchasing lintels for your building, Stromberg is the perfect choice. Whether you want your lintels to be subtle or bold, large or small, smooth or textured, we have the materials and expertise to bring your ideas to life.
