Water Repelling and Efflorescence Controlling Admixture

SikaMix® W-10 is a non-chloride and non-corrosive liquid integral water-repelling admixture for use in concrete masonry units, where zero or very low slump concrete is required. SikaMix® W-10 is formulated to meet ASTM E 514 Standard test for Water Penetration and Leakage Through Masonry. SikaMix® W-10 contains water repellent additives that chemically react with cement, filling the pores of the concrete unit with water insoluble compound and wetting agents, creating a plasticizing effect that densifies the concrete structure. This reduces water absorption capability of the capillary pores and minimizes migration of the water to the surface from within.

Usage

Unlike surface applications, SikaMix® W-10 provides water repellency through the entire thickness of the unit while it reduces efflorescence, maintains color intensity and provides dirt, stain mold and mildew resistance. SikaMix® W-10 can be successfully used where medium and lightweight concrete is required. In addition SikaMix® W-10 improves compaction and densifies the concrete structure, producing a unit with higher compressive strengths, lower absorption, sharper corners and edges, less shrinkage and better overall appearance. SikaMix® W-10 is also suitable for wetcast applications, as well as in mortar, where water repellency is required.

Shelf Life

Shelf life when stored in dry warehouse conditions between 45 °F and 80 °F (7-27 °C) is 1 year.

Storage Conditions

SikaMix® W-10 should be stored at above 45 °F (7 °C). If frozen, thaw and agitate thoroughly to return to normal state.

Application Information

Mixing

Do not introduce admixture onto dry cementitious materials. Timing for dosage will vary with equipment and mixing procedure.

Recommended Dosage

Drycast Applications: Recommended dosage rate of SikaMix® W-10 in drycast and semi-dry concrete applications for improved water repellency and efflorescence control is 4-10 fl.oz. per 100 lbs. (260-650 ml/100 kg) of cementitious material.
If maximum water repellency is required, dosage may be increased up to 16-32 fl.oz. per 100 lbs. (1040-3120 ml/100 kg) of cementitious material. Prior testing is recommended to determine the most effective dosage rate.

Mortar Applications: Refer to the technical data sheet for SikaMix® W-10.

Wetcast Applications: Recommended dosage rate is 4-8 fl.oz per 100 lbs. (260-520 ml/100 kg) of cementitious material. The use of SikaMix® W-10 at the higher end of the dosage range may results in lower compressive strength and potential set retardation. For production of air entrained concrete, higher dosages of air entrainment admixtures will be required when using SikaMix® W-10. Prior testing is recommended to determine adequate fresh and hardened concrete properties when using SikaMix® W-10.

Dosages outside the recommended range may be used for special requirements and applications.
