Although most people do not give too much of a thought to the toilet grates used in modern days, the amazing fact is plumbing existed as early as the 2700 BC in the civilisations of the Indus Valley, among the ancients, the Romans are probably the ones to have perfected the use of plumbing and toilet. The Romans are obsessed with baths and aqueducts and because of this, plumbing became a profession then, the Roman word for the ancient plumber was “plumbarius”.
Unlike our current world, indoor plumbing (think toilet) was available only by the richest during the Roman times. Water flowed under the latrines then and carried the waste into a giant sewerage system which was constantly being improved throughout Roman times.
Back in those ancient days, the main drain channel was so big then if it were dry, a chariot with 4 horses could travel along the drain channels. The ancient Romans build public latrines and networks of sewage pipes and drains to dispose sewage out of the streets of the cities into the rivers. Back then the Roman Empire had big public toilets that house lots of people at the same time.
The sewerage system was so important to the Romans that there was a goddess named “Cloacina” being worshipped in the hope of the proper functioning of the sewerage system - this reflects how important the sewerage system was to the Romans then. In fact the Roman had dedicated city officials dedicated to the management of the sewer system to ensure it’s proper supervision and maintenance, this was a relatively important official position and many fought to preside over it.
In today's world, the toilet continues to play an important role in our lives, more than just serving a sanitation function, Jonite believes we can transform the entire landscape of the toilet.
