Design Considerations

Fire-Trol columns are designed in accordance with the latest specifications of the American Institute of Steel Construction and the American Concrete Institute. Minimum covering of fireproofing is in accordance with the minimum hourly rating requirements established by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. All structural steel used in the core conforms to ASTM Specifications. Concrete filing for pipes or tubular sections is of 5000 p.s.i. mix. The outer shell, sash stops, curtain wall connections and other special features are provided in accordance with the architect's details. Welded shop and field connections are in strict conformance with the current requirements of AISC. Columns are given one shop coat of standard metal primer unless otherwise specified. Fire-Trol columns are readily adaptable to single or multi-story structures of conventional, traditional, or contemporary design...and with any combination of materials.

A complete selection of load-bearing column types is available with exterior shells in round, square, and rectangular shapes. The round exterior shells are Type OO and OH. The square and rectangular exterior shells are Types SH, RH, SO, SS, and RR.

Fire-Trol columns meet the requirements of local, state, national, and federal codes governing fire-resistive construction. Each Fire-Trol column is fabricated in conformance with the requirements of Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., and bears a UL label certifying compliance with requirements as stated in their directory.

Specifications

Scope
These specifications cover the design, fabrication, and erection of Fire-Trol prefabricated, fireproof steel columns.

Design
Design, manufacture, and fabrication of Fire-Trol prefabricated, fireproofed steel columns shall be in accordance with specifications of Dean Lally LP as well as latest specifications of American Institute of Steel Construction, and American Concrete Institute. Minimum covering of fireproofing shall be in accordance with minimum hourly rating requirements established by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (R-3966-2-3-4).

Materials
Load-bearing members as specified by the engineer typically conform to the following grades:

Wide Flange: A-36, A572 GRADE B
HSS (Hollow structural sections): A500 Grade B, A500 Grade C
Pipe: A53B (welded), A106B (Seamless)

In instances where the core is a pipe or tube, Fire-Trol columns are always filled with high strength concrete that shall attain an ultimate compressive strength of 5000 p.s.i. in 28 days, machine mixed and mechanically vibrated to eliminate voids and insure density.

Shop Drawings
Shop drawing shall give complete details necessary for the fabrication of the individual columns and must be approved in writing by the Architect, Engineer, or Structural Steel Contractor before fabrication is started.

Fire Rating
All Fire-Trol columns shall bear the label of Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., for the inspection manifest and the hourly fire rating specified herein.

Connections
Welded shop or field connections shall be in strict conformance with ANSI/AWS D1.1 latest revision. Bolted or riveted shop connections shall be in strict conformance with the American Institute of Steel Construction.

Painting
All column shells shall receive one shop coat of standard metal primer unless otherwise specified. They are prepared to an SP3/power tool clean to remove all loose mill scale, dirt, rust and other foreign materials before the priming coat is applied.

Handling and Erection
All Fire-Trol columns shall be erected in accordance with the latest requirements of the American Institute of Steel Construction. Reasonable care shall be taken not to damage or disfigure protective shells on Fire-Trol columns.
