Special end fittings make these assemblies quicker and easier than ever.

  • The all-stainless QuickConnect-SS ™ fitting is attached to the cable in the field without special tools. One-way jaws allow the cable to easily slide through the fitting in one direction but automatically grab and lock on when the cable is released. Just slip it on, pull the cable tight and cut the excess. Snap on decorative end caps for a finishing touch.
  • The stainless Threaded Terminal fitting is fastened (swaged) to one end of the cable at our factory. Attach it to an end post using a special Snug-Grip ™ washer nut and spin the nut to adjust final tension in the line. The Snug-Grip ™ threads help prevent the nut from loosening. Select 4-1/4" long terminals when attaching to metal posts and 7-1/2" long when attaching to wood posts. Washer-nut, flat washers and colored end caps are all included with each assembly. Stainless end caps are also available as an accessory option.
  • The Cable is a 1x19 construction, type 316 stainless steel for strength, durability and weather protection. Available in 1/8", 3/16" and 1/4" diameters.

Uses and Applications:
CableRail Standard Cable Assemblies can be used as infill on railings, fences or even trellises in interior, exterior, residential, commercial or industrial settings. Plus, their slender profile, compact fittings and attractive stainless steel materials blend well your new or existing wood, steel or aluminum railing frames. The weather-tough, durability of type 316 stainless steel is also perfect for installations in harsher, coastal environments. Please note that the CableRail cable assemblies should never be used for lifting, hanging or other high load applications.

Select from 3 cable sizes:
  • 1/8" Standard Assemblies: Our most popular size. Their slender profile, easy installation and affordability make them the ideal selection for all residential and light commercial installations. Available with either a 4-1/4" or 7-1/2" Threaded Terminal for use on metal or wood railing frames.
  • 3/16" Standard Assemblies: Extra durable option for all commercial projects. They may also be used for certain residential projects where high traffic or design aesthetics require a larger diameter cable. Available with either a 4-1/4" or 7-1/2" Threaded Terminal for use on metal or wood railing frames.
  • 1/4" Standard Assemblies: These extra heavy-duty assemblies are used almost exclusively for higher traffic commercial or industrial settings. Only available with a 4-1/4" Threaded Terminal for use on metal frames; generally not recommended for wood frames.

Components and Parts:
Each assembly includes all of the necessary parts for attaching and tensioning:

  1. A selected length of cable with a Threaded Terminal pre-attached on one end.
  2. 1 QuickConnect-SS™ fitting.
  3. 2 stainless flat washers (or 2 nylon flat washers if using assemblies for metal posts).
  4. 1 stainless Snug-Grip ™ washer-nut.
  5. 2 colored end caps (black, white, gray or brown color options).

Note: stainless end caps are available as an accessory option.

The table below shows the available assembly lengths and corresponding part numbers. We also offer custom lengths, so please ask if you don't see what you need.

Assembly and Installation:
One of the key benefits to using CableRail™ Standard Cable Assemblies is the ease and speed of installation. Pre-fabricated standardized assembly lengths, QuickConnect-SS™ fittings, smaller drill holes and the ability to rough measure and field trim make ordering and installing a snap. Plus, you won't need anything more sophisticated than an electric drill, wrench and some cable cutters.

CableRail Standard Cable Assemblies are designed to be laced horizontally through holes drilled in the end and intermediate posts of your railing frame and then tensioned on opposite end posts with the Threaded Terminal and QuickConnect-SS fittings. Straight runs of cable should not exceed 70 feet, and runs with corner bends (maximum 2 corners) should not exceed 40 feet. Standard assemblies must not be strung back and forth like a shoe lace; instead each horizontal cable must be a separate assembly. Also, they are not recommended for vertical infill; if you require vertical cable infill systems, please give our sales team a call at 1-800-888-2418 for cable and hardware recommendations.

Since cables are under tension, special care must be taken to adequately design and construct your railing frame to ensure proper frame strength. Click on the Sweets CAD Library in the left column to see frame construction recommendations and installation details or visit our CableRail website www.cablerail.com for more complete information on installation steps, frame recommendations, part lists, job photos as well as 3-part specs and detail drawings.

Also, proper spacing of the cables and posts is critical to minimizing cable deflection. We recommend a 3-inch maximum spacing between cables and a 3-ft maximum spacing between posts or vertical members. Be sure to consult local building departments to see if there are any special requirements for using and installing cable railings.

Several accessory items are available that can improve performance, ease installation or add a finished detail. Protector Sleeves can be used on wood posts to prevent abrasion at all cable transition points (i.e. stairs/landing transitions or outside faces of double corner posts). Beveled Washers provide a flat bearing surface for end fittings at angled holes on stair end posts. Stainless End Caps offer an attractive, decorative option for covering and finishing the end fittings.

Materials & Finishes:
CableRail™ Standard Cable Assembly cables are a 1x19 construction made from type 316 stainless steel with a commercial dry polished finish. Ordering:
How to order CableRail™ Standard 1/8" Assemblies:
  1. Carefully Review: read all of the installation instructions, frame recommendations and details pages on our website www.cablerail.com.
  2. Section Frames: divide your railing frame into sections by determining which corner and end posts will be the cable termination posts. Remember that straight runs should not exceed 70 feet and runs with bends (2 bends at most) should not exceed 40 feet.
  3. Determine Lengths: measure the outside lengths of each of your sections from step 2 and select the cable assembly lengths that will fit each section. Be sure that the assemblies are at least 1 foot longer than the measured length of the section.
  4. Calculate Quantities: the number of assemblies depends on your railing design. Remembering that each horizontal cable is a separate assembly and that the cables should not be spaced further than 3 inches apart, calculate the quantities needed for each of your assembly lengths.
  5. Check Accessories & Tools: count up all the protector sleeves, rubber grommets, beveled washers, stainless end caps, cutters, drills, saws, lacing needles and cleaner you may need.
  6. Place Your Order: go to the parts: assemblies and parts: accessories & tools pages on our website www.cablerail.com and place your order on-line or place a phone order at 1-800-888-2418. You should receive your order within 7-10 working days via UPS. Expedited processing and shipping options are available.

Maintenance:
The protective chromium oxide film that forms on the surface of stainless steel gives it superior corrosion resistance. Properly maintained, stainless steel provides excellent luster, strength and durability. In most applications stainless steel will not rust or stain even after many years of service, but stainless steel is not rust or stain proof. When stainless comes in contact with chloride salts, sulfides or other rusting metals, it may discolor or even rust and corrode. With proper maintenance, however, stainless steel can remain beautiful and functional for years to come, even when it's exposed to harsh environments such as ocean air, polluted surroundings and salted highways.
  • Clean stainless frequently with soap and water. Any cleaner safe for glass is usually safe for stainless. Never use mineral acids or bleaches.
  • Never leave stainless in contact with iron, steel or other metals. This can cause rust spots or corrosion.
  • Always remove stains or rust spots as soon as possible with a brass, silver, stainless or chrome cleaner. Irreversible pitting will develop under rust spots that remain on stainless for an extended period of time.
  • Never use coarse abrasives like sandpaper or steel wool on stainless. Use synthetic Scotch type pads instead.
  • Frequently inspect the cable assemblies for proper tension, and re-tension as necessary. This is important.
