Tree Grate Installation

McKinley Tree Grate Company offers a COMPLETE PRODUCT.

The tree grates are bolted to an angle frame.  A concrete metal form is welded to the inside of the frame to facilitate concrete placement.  Anchors are welded to the frame for anchoring in the concrete.  This enables the contractor to set the tree grate as a UNIT and place the concrete.

We suggest that trees be planted after the concrete is placed.  However, for situations where trees are in place – specify the frames to be made in two sections.  Special fastening devices will be fabricated for bolting the frame together after setting around the tree.

It is not practical to set the grate frames without the grates being bolted to the frames.  They will rock and rattle when walked on.

Nowthe easiest way

  • Pour your floor with block-outs.
  • The block-outs should be 12” wider than the width or diameter of the grates.
  • Place the grate fastened to the frame and the concrete form, (welded to the frame) into the block-out.
  • Timbers (2” x 4”) or (4” x 4”) can be placed across the block-out.  The timbers should be at least one foot longer than the width of the block-out.  You will need two timbers per frame.
  • Cut lengths of wire for each timber.  Wire should be sufficiently strong to hold the grate and resist the vibrating of the concrete.  The wire should be long enough to go around a bar of the grate and the timber with sufficient lengths on each end to twist the grate up to the timber.

Grates can later be removed for the digging of the tree well and planting of the tree ball.
