Overview
Wheels n' Heels steel grating is the latest product addition to the Heavy Duty Steel Grating line of Ohio Gratings. This grating is designed to satisfy both the vehicular loading requirements of AASHTO, and the pedestrian comfort requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act.
These gratings, 8-WH-4, 12-WH-4, 15-WH-4, and 23-WH-4, conform to the spacing requirements of the ADA when installed with the elongated opening perpendicular to the dominant direction of travel.
Short Span Series: Spans Less Than 3 Feet
For grating spans less than 3 feet, bearing bars made from 1/4" thick ASTM A-36 steel are arranged at 1/2" (8-WH-4) or 3/4" (12-WH-4) centers. Bearing bars are joined by welding to 3/8" diameter cross rods spaced at 4" centers. The resulting panel grid provides a grating which will carry AASHTO H15 / H20 roadway traffic, or forklift traffic.
In addition, the close spacing of the bearing bars offers a pedestrian friendly 1/4" opening for the 8-WH Series or a 1/2" opening for the 12-WH Series.
Open Area Percentages are as follows: 8-WH-4 = 45% and 12-WH-4 = 60%.
Note: 2 foot maximum panel width is suggested for ease of handling.
Long Span Series: Spans Up To 8 Feet
For clear spans up to 8 feet, the Wheels n' Heels Long Span Series should be specified. Bearing bars made from 1/4" thick ASTM A-36 steel are arranged at 15/16" (15-WH-4) or 1-7/16" (23-WH-4) centers, along with 3/16" thick filler bars on the same centers. These bars are joined by welding to 1" × 1/4" cross bars on 4" centers. The resulting panel grid provides a grating surface which will carry AASHTO H15 / H20 roadway traffic, or forklift traffic.
In addition, the close spacing of the bearing bars and filler bars offers a pedestrian friendly 1/4" opening for the 15-WH Series, or 1/2" opening for the 23-WH Series.
Open Area Percentages are as follows: 15-WH-4 = 51% and 23-WH-4 = 66%.
Note: 2 foot maximum panel width. Banding is required.
The new Wheels n' Heels® Metro has an even greater strength to weight ratio, and much improved aesthetic appeal, since there are now no welds on the top surface. In addition, the filler bars and main bearing bars are both the same thickness thus providing increased percent open area. Included in this new line are types with spacing of 1/2" between the bars to meet ADA requirements as well as types with spacing of 1/4" between bars to accommodate High Heel pedestrian use. Wheels n' Heels® Metro is also bicycle friendly. Various spacing options are available to meet load and specific job requirements. Metro is also available in stainless steel and can be provided with a slip resistant surface to enhance safety.
The Wheels n' Heels® InVent is the newest addition to the Wheels n' Heels® family of grate products. This product type offers the same high strength to weight ratio, excellent appearance and compliance with AASHTO and ADA and High Heel requirements as the Metro type along with being bicycle friendly. The major difference with the InVent style is that the main support bearing bars are hidden under the top surface bars and run in the direction perpendicular to the top surface bars. This feature allows OGi to offer you the most flexibility in product types to fit the grating supports of your project. As with the Metro, a variety of spacings are available, along with stainless steel options and slip resistant surfaces.
Standard Grating Details
Typical details for grating frames and grating anchorage methods are shown in the CAD details attached to this Profile, accessible through the "CAD" button on the interface.
General recommendations for installation include:
1. Grating must be installed with the cross bars on the top side.
2. A 1" minimum bearing shall be provided for bearing bar depths up to 2 inch, and 2" minimum bearing shall be provided for depths of 2-1/2 inch and over.
3. To meet ADA requirements, install grating with the elongated opening perpendicular to the dominant direction of travel.
Steel Grating Frame Details
Available for use with the Wheels n' Heels Series of Heavy Duty Steel Grating are fabricated steel grating frames for embedded concrete applications. These frames are supplied with steel anchor straps welded to the back of the angle. Some grating sizes may need to be shimmed in order to accommodate standard angle dimensions.
Steel grating frames are available fabricated per drawings with mitered corners, or in long lengths with prefabricated corners for installation in the field. Frames can be provided in the mill finished or galvanized condition, and may include a coat of bituminous paint on those surfaces coming into contact with concrete.
Steel Grating Anchorage Details
Wheels n' Heels Heavy Duty Steel Grating may be firmly anchored to the supporting steel by means of an anchor block. Refer to the CAD details attached to this profile, accessible through the "CAD" button on the interface, for isometric details of this anchorage device.
Frame sections can be purchased in stock lengths for customer fabrication, or can be fabricated by Ohio Gratings for immediate installation in the field. The following guidelines apply to fabricated frames:
1. All corners are mitered at 45 degrees and welded on the back side. Welds are not ground.
2. Nominal small frames (i.e., 1'-0" x 1'-0 through 5'-0" x 10'-0") are made in one piece.
3. Extended trench frames are provided with prefabricated end sections and long lengths shipped loose for field butt joining.
4. Stock lengths are 20'-0".
Architectural Applications and Tolerances
"Wheels n' Heels Heavy Duty Steel Grating is an industrial footwalk product, intended for use in trenches, vault grating, sidewalk grating, parking decks and areaways. This grating is also subject to manufacturing and fabrication tolerances as dictated by the NAAMM Heavy Duty Metal Bar Grating Manual. While these tolerances and the various finishes available are suitable for most industrial applications, they may not be appropriate for some commercial or architectural uses. Please contact the factory for further specification assistance."

SLIP-NOT Safety Surface Available
Wheels n' Heels Steel grating is available with SLIP-NOT Grip Grate safety surface for maximum traction. The SLIP-NOT process provides for the plasma stream deposition of steel on steel resulting in a random hatch matrix which continuously presents new abrasive faces as the surface slowly wears.
SLIP-NOT exceeds OSHA standards for "Slip Resistance" in dry, wet, and oily conditions.
SLIP-NOT is generally applied after grating fabrication, however, grating treated with
SLIP-NOT can be cut, punched, drilled, or welded in the shop or in the field.
For complete technical information on SLIP-NOT, refer to the Sweets catalog for W.S. Molnar Co., 05542/SLI. SLIP-NOT Grip Grate is a registered trademark of W.S. Molnar Co.
