FIBERSTRONG RIM BOARD
FiberStrong® Rim Board is manufactured in depths ideally suited for floor systems configured with Georgia-Pacific Wood I Beam joists as well as other I-joists of the same height. A proprietary manufacturing process results in engineering properties that allow for seismic and wind-resistant design. G-P's proven edge and end coating process for moisture resistance virtually ensures dimensional stability and job site durability.
Capacities
Vertical Load:
Rim Doubler Starter joist, or Starter joist with blocking at 24" o.c.
= 5,700 PLF.
Starter Joist without blocking at 24" o.c. = 850 PLF.
Horizontal Load:
(lateral seismic or wind): 200 PLF
1/2" lag or through bolt attaching ledger to rim board: 350 lbs. lateral load per bolt
Lateral load for nails in wide face of rim board: Design per 1997 NDS using Douglas Fir-Larch values.
Connection Requirements
To joist: Face-nail rim board to each joist with two (2) 8d nails, one into top and bottom flange.
To plate: Toe-nail rim board to wall plate with 8d nails at 6" o.c. or 16d nails at 12" o.c.
Subfloor: Attach floor sheathing to rim board per building code or structural panel manufacturer's specifications (closest on-center nail spacing is 6"). For shear transfer (lateral seismic or wind) of up to 200 PLF, use 8d at 6" o.c.
To rim: Face-nail rim boards together at corners with three (3) 8d nails.
Ledger: To attach a ledger use 1/2" through bolts with nuts and washers or 1/2" lag screws (minimum length of 4") with washers. Maintain 2" edge distances on ledger and rim board. For lag screws, drill 5/16" lead holes in rim board and 1/2" holes in ledger. Caulk holes with high quality caulking immediately before inserting the bolts or lag screws. Caution: The lag screw should be inserted in a lead hole by turning with a wrench, not by driving with a hammer. Over-torquing can significantly reduce the lateral resistance of the lag screw and should therefore be avoided.
Approved Applications
FiberStrong® Rim Board has been tested and approved as a rim board
and starter joist by APA-EWS. FiberStrong® Rim Board has not been
evaluated as a structural joist, rafter, header or ledger. For such
applications, consider Wood I Beam Joists or G-P Lam® Glulams and
LVL.

Thanks to FiberStrong® rim board, installation of Wood I Beam® joist systems is now even easier and less time consuming. Solid sawn lumber does not match I-joist depths (and it shrinks); plywood or conventional OSB requires jobsite ripping and does not offer sufficient structural characteristics; and blocking panels are time consuming. FiberStrong rim board is quick and easy.
FiberStrong rim board is sized to match all G-P Wood I beam joist depths from 9-1/2" to 16" ensuring proper fit; 12' lengths result in fewer pieces to handle. The 1-1/8" thickness provides ample nailing surface to attach floor sheathing and allows toe-nailing to the plate. FiberStrong accepts through bolts or lag bolts for ledger attachment when decks are installed. And when used as a starter joist, the solid, rectangular shape eliminates blocking and filling of I-joist webs for siding installation.
