PRODUCT OVERVIEW

Norton's Norseal® V740/V980/V990 Glazing Tapes are expanded cellular foam glazing tapes. When compressed 25 to 50%, they resist air and water infiltration to provide long-lasting, dependable glazing of windows, storefronts, curtainwalls, skylights and other building systems.

Versatile Norseal® V740/V980/V990 Glazing Tapes are compatible with most common glazing materials. Use them to install glass and other types of glazing panels into framing systems fabricated from aluminum, steel, wood, vinyl, and fiberglass. They are available in a wide variety of widths and thickness to fit most glazing systems.

Use Norseal® V740/V980/V990 Glazing Tapes as a primary glazing seal. Or use Norseal® V740/V980/V990 Glazing Tapes together with an optional cap bead or heal bead to create a dual-seal glazing system. V740/V980/V990 is compatible with most silicone, polysulfide, polyurethane, butyl and other quality "wet" sealants.

Norseal® V740 has adhesive on only one face, allowing glass to be repositioned during installation or conveniently removed and replaced as required. Norseal® V980 and V990 have an aggressive adhesive on both faces of the tape to provide an optimum seal. Norseal® V980 has a tearable paper liner while Norseal® V990 has a durable polyethylene liner.

Norseal® V740/V980/V990 Glazing Tapes can also be used as a general purpose sealant for joints in metal ductwork, between building panels, and many other construction applications. It has been used successfully for more than two decades in climates around the world.

PRECAUTIONS: Norseal® V740/V980/V990 Glazing Tapes must be compressed 25 to 50% to maintain an effective seal. In small lites, this may be achieved by applying pressure directly to the glazing tape when installation of glazing stops. However, in most lites, the use of a compression wedge gasket is recommended (see details).

Comply with glazing recommendations of glass or glazing panel manufacturer, framing system manufacturer, Flat Glass Marketing Association, American Architectural Manufacturers Association and other applicable standards.

Recommended service temperature for Norseal® V980/V990: -20°F to 180°F (-29°C to 82°C).

Recommended service temperature for Norseal® V740: -15°F to 160°F (-26°C to 71°C).

Recommended application temperature for all products: 40°F to 125°F (4°C to 52°C).

For use with polycarbonate, acrylic or other plastic glazing panels, it is recommended to use Norton's Norglaze™ F950/F940 Polyolefin Foam Glazing Tapes.

DESCRIPTION: Norseal® V740/V980/V990 Glazing Tapes are formulated from high density polyvinyl chloride (PVC) foam to provide excellent resistance to weathering, ultra-violet aging, oxidation, common chemicals, such as window washing detergents and industrial pollution, and temperature extremes. The foam has a high content of closed cells which, when maintained under a 25 to 50% compression, forms an effective air and water-resistant seal.

As the cellular structure of Norseal® V740/V980/V990 Glazing Tapes is compressed, the foam becomes denser and more difficult to compress. For this reason, Norseal® V740/V980/V990 Glazing Tapes do not require shims or spacers to prevent over-compression of the tapes during wind loading. Butyl glazing tape, on the other hand, does not resist compression and can be displaced or squeezed-out under loading conditions.

The foam tape is coated with an acrylic adhesive that offers excellent, long-lasting adhesion to most common glazing materials including glass, anodized and mill finished aluminum, painted surfaces, wood and vinyl. Norseal® V740 is coated on just one face and Norseal® V980/V990 is coated on both faces.

The compression of the resilient foam and its adhesive faces secures the tape in place, prevents air and water infiltration and resists the normal movement of glazing systems from thermal expansion/contraction and wind loading. Some framing systems have a serrated surface designed to help prevent butyl tapes from pumping out. Serrations are acceptable, but not necessary, with Norseal® Glazing Tape.

Norseal® Glazing Tape is supplied in easy-to-handle rolls. A paper or polyethylene liner prevents the tape from stretching during installation and keeps the adhesive faces clean until ready for use. The "E-Z-Peel" liner has a siliconized treatment to assure it can be removed easily and is the same width as the tape to make placement of the tape more accurate.

Saint-Gobain also produces a broad range of foam tapes and sealants that can be custom engineered for special applications. Contact Saint-Gobain Technical Service for additional information.

INSTALLATION

Preparatory Work: Before starting any glazing job, be sure that surfaces are clean and dry to assure proper adhesion of sealants and glazing tape. On metal framing, remove cutting oils and metal filings. On wood framing, make sure that preservatives and paint finishes are dry.

Metal and glass surfaces can be cleaned with a solvent-dipped cloth followed by a clean, dry cloth to remove particles loosened by the solvent. When using solvents, verify compatibility of solvent with paint finishes and plastics. Observe ventilation and safety precautions.

Provide setting blocks and other glazing accessories in accordance with good glazing practices.

Methods: Norseal® V740/V980/V990 Glazing Tapes can be factory or field-applied.

With 1/32" or 1/16" thick Norseal® V740/V980/V990 Glazing Tapes, the tape can be overlapped at corners. With thicker tape, butt ends of tape without overlapping to prevent voids and pressure points against the glass. In all cases, however, splices and the corner joints of the tape, as well as joints in the framing, must be "buttered" or sealed with compatible caulking material.

Remove the paper or polyethylene liner when ready to install the glass. Then center the glass in the framed opening and firmly push onto the glazing tape to obtain complete contact.

Next, install the glazing stop or snap-in bead to capture the glass in the window. Then install a continuous wedge gasket to compress the tape.

Single Seal: When Norseal® V740/V980/V990 Glazing Tape is used as the primary sealant, the tape should be applied flush with the stationary stop or fixed leg of the glazing channel. Avoid dipping below or above the edge of the glazing channel to avoid pockets which could trap water or cause uneven sight lines.

Dual Seal System: While most installations can satisfactorily be glazed with a single seal of Norseal® V740/V980/V990 Glazing Tape, some installation may require a dual seal glazing system. Dual seals should be considered where performance or reliability is especially critical, in lites over 150 united inches, and in high rise buildings where differential air pressures and water infiltration require special attention.

In a dual seal system, install Norseal® V740/V980/V990 Glazing Tape as the primary seal on the exterior side of the glazing channel, and a heel bead of a gunnable sealant on the interior side. In this system, Norseal® V740/V980/V990 Glazing Tape retards water infiltration between the frame and the glass. The heel bead acts as s dam so that the water in the channel must exit out the weep holes. More importantly, especially in high rise buildings, the heel beads acts as an air seal so that negative pressures inside the building or wall cavity will not draw water and air around the primary seal or back through the weep holes.

An optional cap bead can also be installed on either the exterior side of the glass to provide a weather cap for the Norseal® V740/V980/V990 Glazing Tapes, or the interior side to provide and additional air barrier.

Precautions: Do not block weep holes with sealants or glazing tape. Assure that any water which does not enter glazing channel can drain to exterior.
