Ametco® Gate Systems: Swinging, V-Wheel Roller and Cantilever

PRODUCT PRESENTATION
The Ametco® Gate System is the ideal complement to Ametco® fencing. It provides all the advantages of being practical, sturdy, beautiful, durable and visually harmonious.

Three gate types are available:

  • Swing
  • V-Wheel Roller
  • Cantilever

Gate frames are constructed using welded steel tubing that is lightweight, strong and rigid. These frames are then combined with Ametco® fencing panels to form the gate sections.

Ametco® offers four types of gate infill panels:

  • Steel Grille Panels
  • Fixed Metal Louvers in aluminum, stainless steel, or galvinized steel
  • Welded Wire Panels

The gate assemblies are galvanized and can be finished using thermo-hardening powder coatings. This superior finishing system virtually eliminates corrosion and maintenance problems.

The stainless steel and aluminum infill panels do not require galvanizing and, when painted, yield a smoother surface than galvanized carbon steel. The color gives an extra touch of appeal to the gates, harmonizing with its surroundings. Once you have selected the color from the wide range of choices available, it will endure exposure without crazing or fading.

Swing Gates

  1. Single Pedestrian Gate width typically ranges from 3'-0" to 6'-0" maximum. Gate height usually matches the adjacent fence. Total area for a single leaf should not exceed 60 sq. ft.
  2. Double Pedestrian Gate clear opening width typically ranges from 5'-0" to 40'-0" maximum. Gate height usually matches the adjacent fence. Total area for single leaf should not exceed 200 sq. ft. The architect must dimension unequal width leaves on the plans.
  3. Large Swing Gates are used to close openings larger than 6'-0" in width. Maximum leaf size should not exceed 30'-0" in width. Maximum leaf area should not exceed 300 sq. ft. Gate height usually matches the adjacent fence. Large Swing Gates can be fabricated using cane bolts to secure each leaf or with optional center posts and slide bolts.

Swing Gate Design Considerations

  1. Gates can be designed for use independently of Ametco® fencing, for direct attachment to surrounding construction, with unequal width leaves, or to meet other special requirements. Ametco® will supply the correct number of hinges for each gate leaf based on size, weight and service requirements.
  2. Swing Gates are furnished standard with posts, leaf or ball bearing hinges, and padlockable bolts(s) [cane and/or slide type]. See the CAD Details attached to this Profile for these components.
  3. For openings requiring smaller leaf sizes, swing gates may be attached directly to standard Ametco® fence posts. For larger leaves, square steel tube gate-posts will be required. Contact Ametco® for assistance in sizing gate-posts and determining optimum footing design.
  4. Optional Features: Pickets may be added to fences using Metro®, Blockade®, Stadium® and Lattice panels. Gates with matching pickets may be specified.

See below for detailed descriptions and illustrations of the Ametco® infill panels.

Swing Gate Installation

  1. Single and Double Pedestrian gates are typically attached to posts using 4-1/2" round bolts.
  2. Large Swing Gates are typically attached to posts using 6-1/2" dia. bolts.
  3. Gate posts shall have substantial footings and be installed plumb.
  4. All concrete must be cured before hanging gates.
  5. Most gates will be attached to posts using bolts in slotted holes. Gate leaves shall be adjusted level using steel shims.

Welding
Swing Gates of all types can be welded to posts when security or other special needs arise. Please contact Ametco® when considering welding Swing Gates to posts.

V-Wheel Roller Gates

These rolling gates are supported by V-profile wheels that engage a special V-profile steel track set into concrete. Wheels may be steel or plastic. For stability, horizontally mounted guide rollers engage the top framing member of the gate. Ametco® supplies these gates with V-Wheels, track, posts and guide wheels. Frame sizes, roller diameters and other details are shown on the CAD Details attached to this Profile.

V-Wheel Roller Gates can be supplied with single or dual wheels. Single wheels are used with gates up to 15' wide and 600 lbs. in weight. Dual wheels are used for added stability in all gate sizes and for larger units. Plastic wheels may be specified for units less than 600 lbs. in weight. Contact Ametco® for assistance in selecting the optimum wheel configuration and material for your project.

The steel guide tracks are supplied for either single or dual wheels. They are attached directly to concrete with countersunk fasteners and can be surface or recessed mounted. To review track details, please refer to the CAD Details attached to this Profile.

V-Wheel Roller Gate Design Considerations

  1. Concrete used for track mounting must be "level" within 1/2".
  2. Concrete used to support V tracks must be designed to resist movement due to frost, expansive soils or other causes.
  3. The standard post size is 4" (101mm) dia. round steel pipe. Ametco® supplies post caps. Posts must be set into substantial concrete footings. We recommend footings not less than 1'-6" dia. x 3'-6" deep (450mm dia. x 1066mm deep). Contact Ametco® for assistance with special footing conditions and sizing requirements.
  4. V-Wheel Roller Gates are typically used across openings that range from 4'-0" to 60' maximum.
  5. When planning V-Wheel Roller Gate installations, be sure to account for the space required to mount the stabilizing posts and to allow for gate travel. To review planning and dimensioning requirements, please refer to the CAD Details attached to this Profile.

See below for detailed descriptions and illustrations of the Ametco® infill panels.

V-Wheel Roller Gate Installation

  1. Install track in concrete by anchors or poured concrete - check elevation.
  2. Final track leveling and alignment is done using solid steel shims.
  3. Install stabilizing post in concrete, square and level.
  4. Mount V-wheels to gate and set gate on V-track.
  5. Attach top guide-roller and adjust for smooth operation.
  6. Run gate on track-mount stops.

Cantilever Gates

Ametco® now offers two styles of Cantilever Slide Gates:

  • Monorail Style (steel and aluminum track)
  • Single Track Style
  • Double Track Style
The extruded aluminum track, custom fabricated trucks and the steel or aluminum Monorail Track Systems make Ametco's Cantilever Gates perform smoothly even on the largest gates. Ametco's engineering department will be glad to work with you in selecting the best system to meet your requirements.

The Single Track Style suspends the gate using an extruded aluminum track attached to the top of the gate frame. The track is supported and guided by rollers attached to ground mounted steel posts. Horizontally mounted guide rollers contact the lower framing member to stabilize the gate. These guide rollers are attached to the steel support posts. This gate is furnished with track, rollers, posts and roller guides. All components are fully adjustable to account for field variations and operating tolerances.

The Double Track Style suspends the gate using an extruded aluminum track attached to the top of the gate frame and a second track attached to the bottom of the gate frame. Both tracks are supported and guided by rollers attached to ground mounted steel posts. This gate is furnished with track, rollers, and posts. All components are fully adjustable to account for field variations and operating tolerances.

Call the factory for assistance when designing Cantilever Gates.

Ametco®’s Cantilever Gates are supplied ready for manual operation. Electric operator systems, not furnished by Ametco®, may be incorporated. Contact Ametco® for assistance in designing and specifying electrically operated Cantilever Gates.

Cantilever Gate Design Considerations

  1. When planning Cantilever Gate installations be sure to account for the space required to mount the overhang posts and allow for gate travel. To review planning and dimensioning requirements, please refer to the CAD Details attached to this Profile.

See below for detailed descriptions and illustrations of the Ametco® infill panels.

Cantilever Gate Installation (Single Track Design)

  1. Gate post must be 4" (101mm) round with substantial footings in order to reduce vibration. If need be, place top and bottom rail between the two primary gate posts. Gate posts shall have substantial footings and be installed plumb.
  2. All concrete must be cured before hanging gates.
  3. Track assembly to gate frame must be square at a 90º angle.
  4. Tighten bolts for back brackets firm; excessive pressure is not required.
  5. Once the track is permanently installed to the gate frame, run the truck through the track to assure freedom of movement.
  6. Truck brackets may be offset as required for necessary clearance of track assembly with gate posts. Truck should be bolted to post bracket with some pressure.
  7. The lower portion of the gate frame should pass through the guide wheels without binding.
  8. NOTE: NOT SUPPLIED BY AMETCO®. If electrically operated, run the gate by hand before connecting chain, to be sure the gate runs with little effort.
  9. Where splicing is required to extend track assembly, straddle splice joint with back plate and tighten bolts sequentially to assure proper alignment.

MATERIALS and FINISHES

Lasting Colors
Ametco® gates are protected by extremely effective coating systems, giving long life with a touch of elegance. The hot dip galvanized finish with a polyester powder coating gives Ametco® fencing protection from the elements, as well as increasing its sturdiness and eliminating maintenance. This system gives the best corrosion protection in the industry.

The hot dip galvanizing will leave rough areas on the treated surface. These rough areas do not impair the coating in terms of corrosion resistance. The galvanized product is then powder coated. The color gives an “extra” touch of appeal to the Ametco® fencing system, harmonizing with its surroundings. Once you have selected the color from the wide choices available, it will endure exposure without crazing or fading. For jobs where a smooth surface is requires, see Ametco®’s Fixed Louver Aluminum or stainless steel products.

Colors

We also offer custom colors on a minimum order basis. Please contact Ametco® for additional information.

Finish Warranty
The American Hot Dip Galvanizers Association, Inc. states, “The life expectancy of galvanized coatings on typical structural member is far in excess of 50 years in most rural environments and 20 to 25 years plus, even in severe urban and coastal exposure.”

The warranty for the powder coated finish is 20 years. The polyester coated galvanized metal remains corrosion free for years.

Performance properties for the polyester coating are as follows:

SALT SPRAY RESISTANCE: (ASTM B-117) Bonderite 1000 steel panels, in a scored condition, exhibit no undercutting after 500 hours in 5% spray testing at 95 degrees F and 95% relative humidity. No rusting or blistering on panel face. Under the same conditions after 1000 hours the panels showed less than 3/16 " undercutting.

WEATHERABILITY: (ASTM D822) After one year exposure in South Florida with panels facing south and tilted at a 45 degree angle, a high gloss white polyester coating retains 88% gloss (gloss readings obtained on washed panels). No film failure.

A 2-part polyurethane coat on top of hot dip galvanized is used when gates are too large to be powder coated. Ametco® Mfg. Corp. certifies that its fencing systems are free from defects in material and workmanship. The polyester coated finish is guaranteed not to crack, peel or blister for a period of 20 years. Accidental damages, defects resulting from improper installation and damage from vandalism or abuse are not included. Warranty is limited to a prorated value of the coating, not to exceed the original value of the coating. Or, at Ametco®’s discretion, re-coating the panel but not to include labor removal or reinstallation.
