Lyon Antimicrobial Lockers with New Antimicrobial Finish

Fights Bacterial and Mold Growth!

There is a problem lurking in public places. Society has become increasingly aware of the need to prevent the growth of bacteria, mold and fungi, especially in public facilities like schools and hospitals.

Common topical antimicrobial treatments, such as ethyl alcohol, antibacterial soaps and disinfectant sprays, do kill harmful germs, but provide no residual protection and do not prevent recontamination.

The best solution for long term protection and cleanliness, therefore, is to use antimicrobial substances on surfaces at risk for bacterial/fungal growth, or cross contamination through the touch transfer of these microbes.

Lyon Antimicrobial Lockers specifically address this problem with an advanced powder technology in partnership with DuPont and Agion™ Antimicrobial.

Lyon Antimicrobial Lockers are finished in an advanced powder coating technology from DuPont that inhibits mold, bacterial and odor build-up on locker surfaces, as well as the touch transfer of microbes on locker handles and doors.

Here’s how it works: Any moisture triggers the controlled release of powerful silver ions to provide superior antimicrobial protection for decades. The antimicrobial compound is completely inorganic, less toxic than ordinary table salt, less irritating than talcum powder, and has been approved by the EPA, FDA and NSF for medical devices and food contact applications.

When Evaluating an Antimicrobial Product, the Important Questions to Consider Are:

1. Does it work?
Unlike common topical treatments, the antimicrobial finish on Lyon Antimicrobial Lockers provide continuous, residual protection against the touch transfer of bacteria on locker doors and handles, as well as colonization of mold and bacteria in locker corners, seams and on hidden surfaces behind and under the locker.

Bacteria build-up can lead to odors within the locker as well as contamination of the contents, and there are increasing concerns related to mold growth.

The chart shows the results of an independent study on the antimicrobial performance of this finish.

2. Is it safe? The antimicrobial technology in the powder coat finish on Lyon Antimicrobial Lockers has been tested extensively to ensure its safety, and has passed every test with flying colors.

  • Acute skin irritation, sensitization — not irritant (corrosive) or reactive (allergenic)
  • Acute oral, dermal, inhalation toxicity — LD 50
  • Mutagenicity — not causative of mutations
  • Carcinogenicity — not carcinogenic
  • Subchronic (90 days) and chronic toxicity (2 year) — NOAEL

This antimicrobial compound is completely inorganic, less toxic than ordinary table salt, less irritating than talcum powder, and has been approved for medical devices and food contact applications.

3. How much does it cost?
The initial cost is small. More importantly, the lifetime cost is minimal, because this antimicrobial technology will continue releasing bacteria and mold-killing silver ions for the entire projected 20-year life of the lockers — and beyond.

We look at it this way: The cost is small. The peace of mind, immeasurable.

4. How do I specify the Lyon Antimicrobial Finish?
The Antimicrobial powder paint can be added to any metal locker specification, in PART 2 - PRODUCTS under the “FINISHES” heading. Recommended language is: “Exposed steel parts shall be thoroughly cleaned and given a bonding and rust inhibitive phosphate treatment and then electrostatically sprayed with a powder coat finish containing AgIon Antimicrobial compound. Provide a minimum dry film thickness of 1.5 mils. Handles and other plated surfaces shall be coated with a clear powder coat containing AgIon Antimicrobial compound.”

Alternatively, you may include the antimicrobial coating as an “alternate locker finish upgrade” in your specifications when issuing them for bidding and estimating purposes.

Note: the Lyon Antimicrobial Finish is available in all standard and custom colors as well as clearcoat finishes.
