ACO Sport Systems:
Drainage Systems and Accessories for Track and Field Facilities

PRODUCT PRESENTATION

Running track drainage systems and accessories is an area where ACO excels; proof is the embracement of ACO’s products by the designers of Olympic Stadiums around the world.

ACO Sport offers a full product line of running track drainage and other related track & field accessories including electric boxes, sand traps, polymer concrete bleachers, water jump pits, elastic curbing and bordering. Applications include sport stadiums, recreational facilities, and playgrounds.

The ACO SPORT products are carefully designed to function without interrupting the overall visual appearance of the track & field area. This unique characteristic has caught the eyes of designers and planners of sport facilities from Seoul to Atlanta, from Munich to Los Angeles, from Barcelona to Montreal…

Great emphasis has been given to safety in the design of all ACO SPORT products. Elastic Curbing and bordering systems use soft yet resilient EPDM rubber tops to protect athletes against injuries in the track & field activities.

Why use Surface Drainage?
Water is a problem for synthetic surfaces. Standing water, particularly in colder climates where the water can freeze, causes damage. Water run-off from surrounding areas brings sediments, debris and pollutants, which can increase the rate of surface deterioration. This surface damage can be minimized, or prevented, by proper drainage systems. Effective drainage is critical in the design and construction of any athletic facility.

  • Reduces rain delays
  • Improves conditions for runners, coaches and spectators
  • Extends the life and performance of the track surface

Why use Trench Drainage?
  • Provides effective drainage without the need to construct complex slopes
  • High quality, modular product allows easier installation, while maintaining strict site tolerances required for running tracks
  • Provides continuous barrier to protect running track from contaminated run-off from in-field, or surround areas

Why use a Polymer Concrete Trench Drain?
IAAF and ASBA lay out strict guidelines for any sporting arena - particularly where prestigious events are held and new records may be set. Construction tolerances can be less than 0.125” around a 400m track. Polymer concrete is a rigid inert material that helps maintain these tight tolerances.

Polymer concrete also offers a similar rate of expansion and contraction to surrounding cement concrete. Other common trench materials such as HDPE have poor thermal qualities; around a 400m track, with an ambient temperature change of 75°F, a HDPE trench system can expand by 130” more than a concrete surround. This difference in expansion/ contraction can cause channels to buckle and pull away from the concrete. The problem is compounded as the trench is generally laid continuously around the track, thus having no start or finish, and nowhere to expand.

Materials
The majority of ACO Sport products are manufactured from polymer concrete which offers the following benefits:

  • Excellent compressive strength - 14,000psi (up to 4 times stronger than cement concrete)
  • Good flexural strength - 4,000psi
  • Low coefficient of friction - n=0.011 (for maximum hydraulics)
  • Low water absorption +0.07% (C-97)
  • Excellent corrosion resistance - resistant to salt, fertilizers and other chemicals
  • Low coefficient of expansion relative to cement

Design Features
  • Curved channels for radius ends of track.
  • Radius bottom inside channels for more efficient hydraulics.
  • Attractive bordering for track and field.
  • Lock-down for artificial turf.
  • Cushioning, weather-resistant EPDM Borders.
  • Easily installed modular polymer concrete units.
  • ACO SPORT systems comply with the IAAF (International Amateur Athletic Federation) guidelines.

ACO Track Drainage Products

  • ACO SPORT System 1000: A versatile 5" wide track drainage system available with white canopy cover which marks the border of the track.
  • ACO SPORT System 2000: The premier running track drainage system as used on IAAF (International Amateur Athletics Federation) tracks. The system consists of straight and curved slot drainage channels with a catch basins.
  • ACO SPORT System 3000: The economical, general-purpose running track drain system used by colleges and schools. The system has straight and curved channels with catch basins.
  • ACO SPORT System 4000: An open channel drain with removable grates. Ideal for areas around synthetic turf fields, tennis courts and general sports field use.
  • ACO SPORT System 6000: The premier open channel drain with synthetic turf clamping devices to neatly secure the artificial turf.

ACO Event Specific Products

  • ACO SPORT System 7100: Elastic curbing: Polymer concrete curbing with integral rubber capping, for use around sand pits to protect athletes from injury.
  • ACO SPORT System 7200: Sand traps used with the elastic curbing to form a cushioned edge for the sand pits. They are used to prevent spillage of sand to the surrounding area.
  • ACO SPORT System 8100 Steeple Chase and Water Jump Pit: Modular, interlocking concrete units forming pit walls. Polymer concrete units do not absorb water and are unaffected by freeze / thaw cycles and resist fungal growth.
  • ACO SPORT System 8400 Communications Box: Enables easy access to power, internet or water at convenient locations around the stadium.
  • ACO SPORT System 9000 Bleacher Seating: A series of modular, interlocking units that create a multi-level terrace for seating and standing.

USES and APPLICATIONS

ACO SPORT Systems are designed to perform at a wide array of sport facilities whether in an Olympic stadium, university or secondary school athletic field.
