Grating Choices

The ACO DRAIN FG200 system is offered with a choice of four grates to accommodate different types of applications. Material includes gray and ductile iron and galvanized or stainless steel. Types include slotted, bar and an ADA compatible. All grates are locked down onto the channel frame with steel bolts.

The metal rail edge is available as black coated, galvanized or stainless steel. Aquaduct is able to produce channels, frames and grates in other materials for applications where a high corrosion resistance is required.

The choice of grate for a particular application depends primarily on the load requirements.

MATERIALS and FINISHES

Polyester Fiberglass Composition
Fiberglass is a very lightweight material. This enables longer, wider channels to be manufactured that can still be easily handled on-site. It can be cast into precision shapes, and is relatively low cost material to use for custom applications. Fiberglass for the FG100 and FG200 channels is made using polyester resins; Aquaduct channels are available using a wide range of different resins and fibers to meet higher corrosion resistance requirements.

Surface Performance
The smooth internal surface (Manning’s roughness coefficient for fiberglass is 0.008) encourages improved liquid flow. ACO Drain trench systems allow greater discharge rates to be achieved, or longer lengths of channel to be installed before an outlet is required.

Resistance to Biological Attack
The channels’ smooth impervious internal surface resists bacterial growth. Chemical cleaning and disinfecting can be carried out regularly without danger of deterioration. The use of high concentrations of bleach and caustic solutions should not be used with polyester fiberglass (FG100 & FG200 channels), an Aquaduct system using Vinyl ester resin should be considered.

Resistance to Temperatures
With a moisture absorption rate of nil, fiberglass is completely resistant to frost and freeze-thaw cycles. The maximum recommended temperature for permanent contact is 180°F (82°C).

ACO Drain channels can occasionally be steam cleaned or exposed to boiling water, without risk of damage. Where continual exposure to boiling liquids or intensive steam cleaning is likely, an alternative channel material, for example stainless steel, should be considered. For further information contact Aquaduct, Inc. at (800) 662-2377.

Physical Properties - Fiberglass
Compressive Strength 24,000 psi
Flexural Strength 9,943 psi
Manning's Roughness Coeffcient 0.008 (av)
Water Absorbtion (by weight) +0.33%

Chemical Resistance
ACO Drain fiberglass channels are highly resistant to chemical attack and, with the appropriate grating, can be used in most environments where acids and dilute alkalis are likely to be encountered. Fiberglass is also not affected by road de-icing salts.

In situations where exposure to aggressive chemicals is likely, Aquaduct should be contacted to consider other resins such as Vinyl ester and possibly other fibers.

Important Considerations for Chemical Environments

When reviewing the potential application of a trench drain in a chemical environment, the following issues should be considered

  • Type(s) of specific chemical(s).
  • Concentration percentages.
  • Contact time with trench material.
  • Range of temperatures of chemicals flowing into the trench drain system.
  • The kind of flushing system employed to clear chemicals from the system.
  • Cleaning agents should also be checked for compatibility with channel materials.
  • The type of traffic must always be taken into account, to ensure correct load specification.
  • ACO test blocks can be used to make a final determination for chemical resistance.
  • Grate, edge rail/frame, outlet and trash bucket materials need to be checked for chemical resistance.

If ACO Drain standard products cannot provide adequate chemical resistance, contact Aquaduct, Inc. for a full custom product solution.

Please call for our Chemical Resistance Chart before making design and specification decisions.

ACO Aquaduct Custom Engineered Systems

ACO recognizes that in many applications off-the-shelf products will not solve the user's drainage problem. For these situations, ACO has a separate company - Aquaduct.

Aquaduct solves drainage problems on an individual project basis using fiberglass, stainless steel and other materials.

To solve these special problems, Aquaduct can:
  • Design and manufacture trenches of virtually any width, depth, slope or shape. The slope can be varied to account for an uneven finished grade.
  • Manufacture the trench from different materials, depending on the liquid being handled. Aquaduct works with many different polyester and vinyl resins, as well as various grades of stainless steel.
  • Provide appropriate grating in the proper material for the application.
  • Design and manufacture custom double contained drainage systems for areas of high sensitivity. Environmental problems can wreak havoc upon any industry. Double contained products provide an extra measure of security required by many manufacturers conscious of EPA regulations.
  • Design and manufacture custom sumps and catch basins. Both in conjunction with a trench drain system or stand-alone, sumps and catch basins can be fabricated to suit any situation.

Aquaduct also provides on-site technical service to advise on installation of these custom products.

AQUADUCT CASE STUDY

Project:
George Bush Intercontinental Airport - Houston, TX
Terminal B Development Apron Paving

Owner:
Continental Airlines, Houston, TX

Product:
Aquaduct Custom 8" wide Trench Drain
Galvanized steel grate frames
Ductile Iron slotted Grates (200,000 lb. proof load)
Stainless steel grate lockdown bolts

When Nathelyne A. Kennedy & Associates of Houston, TX was commissioned to do the civil engineering design work on this project, they immediately realized that efficient yet cost-effective drainage of the apron pavement would be essential to a proper design. In addition, they were aware that the owner was in need of the aircraft parking space afforded by the construction of this apron, and the project would be under great pressure for a rapid completion.

Trench drains were a logical choice for the apron drainage, and designing around a pre-engineered system would ensure staying within the constraints of both the budget and the construction schedule. However, special slopes were required in order to meet the flow requirements, something rarely found in pre-engineered systems. Aquaduct was able to meet all of these needs with a custom-made 8" trench drain system. Aquaduct varied the slope of the trench drain units in order to control water flow, yet still allowing the use of standard ACO grate frames and grates for excellent economy.

Aquaduct, Inc. pre-assembled the five trench drain systems into 18' lengths and delivered the product on a dedicated flatbed trailer. LA Utilities, Inc. of Stafford, TX installed the 573 feet of Aquaduct trench drain in record time, leading to rapid project completion and a very happy owner.
