Grip-Rite® House-Wrap

Grip-Rite® House-Wrap is an ICC-ES evaluated weather-resistive barrier fabricated of tough woven HDPE fabric that minimizes air infiltration from the exterior, while allowing moisture to escape the interior.

Air infiltration can be a huge drain on utility costs. According to most studies, the Effective Leakage Area (ELA) of typical houses built to moderately tight standards is between 70 and 120 square inches and that house-wrap reduces leakage of outside air through the wall assembly from 40% to 93%. Air leak is found where sheets of plywood or wall sheathing abut one another. In an unwrapped house, it is easy for cooled or heated air to escape out of the house. While a home using Grip-Rite House-Wrap will effectively block air infiltration or air transfer lessening the burden on the mechanical system - thus resulting reduced energy costs.

Made of highly durable and tear-resistant high-density polyethylene, Grip-Rite House-Wrap offers higher UV resistance and better tensile strength than the leading brand. Grip-Rite's 9x5 wind-resistant weave substrate, combined with two-side coating, make it the proven choice for durability and function:

  • Reducing the flow of moisture-laden air into and out of wall cavities, improving air quality
  • Reducing air infiltration
  • Reducing drafts and improving the thermal performance of exterior walls
  • Improving building durability by protecting sheathing and framing from moisture
  • Protecting wall sheathing when rain and water gets behind siding, brick or stucco
  • Improving energy efficiency
  • Helping prevent mold, mildew and other moisture-related problems
Balanced Performance

Suitable for a wide range of climates, Grip-Rite House-Wrap strikes a perfect balance between minimizing air filtration in and moisture escaping out, allowing the exterior walls to have higher insulation performance and protecting the interior wall cavity. Sheathing and stud wall components are also protected, as Grip-Rite® House-Wrap is proven to stop bulk water intrusion.

Code compliant

The Grip-Rite House-Wrap ICC-ES evaluation number is ESR 2248 and it was tested by Trinity Exterior Research and Design laboratory in accordance with ICC-ES AC38, Acceptance Criteria for Water-Resistive Barriers. Grip-Rite House-Wrap exceeded all criteria in compliance with building code established for the product category.

Easy to Install

Grip-Rite House-Wrap comes in a variety of roll sizes to suit all jobsite installation needs. Grip-Rite is lightweight, easy to handle, and translucent, allowing framing materials to be easily located.

Before installation, make sure that the House-Wrap is prepared to be unrolled with the printed side facing out. The House-Wrap is applied after the exterior wall has been framed, or insulated, and before windows and doors have been installed. Begin applying the House-Wrap to the exterior side of exterior walls starting 6 inches (152.4 mm) from the corner. The product is to be installed horizontally with the base of the wall (6 inches from the corner) and nailed securely to the framing members. House-Wrap should extend over the sill plate at least 2 to 3 inches (50.8 mm to 76.2 mm).

All horizontal and vertical laps should overlap a minimum of 8 inches (203.3mm). All vertical and horizontal laps must be taped using high quality Grip-Rite House-Wrap seam tape.

Grip-Rite® Fasteners are recommended for the installation of House-Wrap. Grip-Rite fasteners that are acceptable in the application of House-Wrap are Grip-Cap® plastic cap nails, or Grip-Rite staples with a minimum of a 1-inch (25 mm) crown. Fasteners are to be applied every 12 to 18 inches (304.8 mm to 457.2 mm) on vertical stud lines, and 8 inches (203.3 mm) on center along top and bottom sill plates.

For installation around windows and doors, cut the House-Wrap with a modified "I-cut." Fold the bottom and side flaps into the rough opening and secure to the framing members removing any excess material.

When installing House-Wrap over non-structural sheathing or foam insulation products, the House-Wrap is applied with large-headed fasteners long enough to penetrate at least ¾ inch into the framing member.

House-Wrap can be exposed on a job site for 6 months before the exterior sheathing must be applied over the House-Wrap.
