Colloidal Silica-Based Troweling Aid with Added Performance

Lythic Day1 is a colloidal silica-based compound that acts as a troweling aid, curing agent, and a substitute for a membrane-forming curing compound. It is shipped as a concentrate and diluted with water at a 4:1 ratio to make a working solution with a coverage of approximately 1000sf/gal. The solution is spray-applied to freshly laid concrete before it is worked by the power-trowel. Lythic Day1 reacts with the calcium hydroxide in the concrete to form additional CSH, becoming a permanent part of the slab surface. It does not form a film or membrane and reduces drag, increasing the speed of the power-trowel.

Day1 slows surface evaporation, as well, giving finishers between 15 and 45 minutes longer to finish the slab. Field testers indicate treatment with Day1 reduced the effect of conditions such as wind, sun, increases in ambient temperature, dry fill material, and other factors beyond the finishers' control. Anecdotal evidence from contractors indicates using Day1 can “save” concrete slabs that were “getting away” from the finishers. “It’s like having another finisher on the job,” said contractors.

As corroborated by third-party laboratory testing, Day1 slows evaporation after final set, improving curing. It is non-membrane forming, though it has similar water-loss performance as membrane-forming curing compounds. Day1 also resists liquid penetration, causing water to bead and run off, aiding in waterproofing.

Day1 is a multifaceted treatment that increases the performance of your concrete. It improves curing, aids in finishing, and resists liquid penetration while becoming an integral part of the concrete slab.

Information for Architects

Lythic DAY1 Troweling Aid, Densifier and Curing Agent is a colloidal silica-based topical additive that makes concrete flatwork finishing easier and faster, and produces a better result. Applied during floating and troweling, Lythic DAY1 lubricates the surface for easier, faster finishing, increases cream for a better finish, significantly extends workability time under adverse conditions, slows surface drying and premature set, and eliminates the need for adding water during finishing. It provides moisture-retention performance like a liquid membrane forming curing compound; however, no membrane is formed.

  • Becomes a permanent part of the slab, there is nothing to remove
  • Curing is effectively extended, reducing water vapor transmission through the slab
  • Increased surface strength and durability
  • Reduces the potential for efflorescence
  • Increased resistance to liquid penetration and staining
  • Mitigates slab curling by reducing evaporation at the surface
  • Minimizes the potential for checking, crazing, and other drying-related surface issues
