Steel Roof Deck

Single Ply Ballasted Roof System / Steel Deck

In a Steel Deck roof system with Ballasted Single-Ply Insulation, ballast holds the insulation in place and protects it from solar loading.

Fully Adhered Single Ply Roof System / Steel Deck

Single-Ply foam board can be fully adhered to steel-deck roofs, but solvent-based membrand adhesives and dark color membranes require a cover board, such as 1/2" wood fiber, between the insulation and the membrane. A light-color, chemically compatible membrane can be applied directly to polystyrene insulation with water-based adhesives.

Mechanically Attached Single Ply Roof System / Steel Deck

Single-Ply foam board can be mechanically attached to steel-deck roofs, but solvent-based membrand adhesives and dark color membranes require a cover board, such as 1/2" wood fiber, between the insulation and the membrane. A light-color, chemically compatible membrane can be applied directly to polystyrene insulation.

Reroof Single Ply / Steel Deck

On Steel Deck Roofs, one layer of DURAPINK® can be applied over an existing roof of maximum insulation thickness of 3" and maximum R-value of 17, using mechanical fasteners. It can also be applied over coal tar pitch, but only if it is at least 10 years old and has not been resaturated in at least 4 years. DURAPINK® is not a cover board and should not be used directly over new or existing insulation. It is not for use in total tear-off or new construction.

BUR Modified Bitumen Roof System / Steel Deck

A BUR Modified Bitumen / Steel Deck roofing system employs a cover board applied to the top of the insulation board which is in turn covered with a BUR, torch applied or self adhering modified bitumen membrane. Finally, a protective layer or gravel, slag or white marble chips is applied to the surface bitumen.

FOAMULAR® 404 & 404 RB Extruded Polystyrene Insulation

ASTM C578 Type VI, 40 psi, 1.8 pcf density

FOAMULAR® 404 & 404 RB extruded polystyrene insulations are specially designed for use in Protected Roof Membrane Assemblies (PRMA), where the insulation is placed directly over the membrane. The compressive strength of FOAMULAR® extruded polystyrene insulation provides the integrity needed for long-term roof performance. Extruded polystyrene is the type of insulation recommended for PRMA applications. Owens Corning offers four specific types of FOAMULAR® extruded polystyrene insulation for this use: FOAMULAR® 404 and 604; and FOAMULAR® 404 RB and 604 RB. Both the 404 RB and 604 RB extruded polystyrene insulations feature drainage channels running the length of the panel. These are excellent extruded polystyrene products.

Owens Corning’s FOAMULAR® extruded polystyrene insulation is an ENERGY STAR® qualified product.

FOAMULAR® 604 & 604 RB Extruded Polystyrene Insulation

ASTM C578 Type VII, 60 psi, 2.2 pcf density

FOAMULAR® THERMAPINK® Extruded Polystyrene Insulation

ASTM C578 Type IV, 25 psi
ASTM C578 Type X, 18 psi

THERMAPINK® insulation has long-term thermal resistance stability compared to polyisocyanurate foam products. It also provides efficiencies during installation such as "direct-to-steel deck" with no gypsum board thermal barrier needed in most commercial single-ply and metal roofing systems.

Owens Corning’s FOAMULAR® extruded polystyrene insulation is an ENERGY STAR® qualified product. Other grades may be available with minimum order quantities.

FOAMULAR® DURAPINK® Extruded Polystyrene Insulation

ASTM C578 Type X, IV, 18 psi (1/2"), 25 psi (1")

New economy and durability for worn out commercial roofs, DURAPINK® roofing recovery board saves the trouble and expense of removing the old roof, and adds insulation and helps with moisture protection to the new one. Roofing recovery is an increasingly popular means of reroofing for aged and trouble-plagued roofs. The decision to recover a roof is based on two compelling reasons: The cost involved in tearing off the old roof, and the cost of disposing of the discarded debris – both of which can be significant. When you recover, both costs are avoided. To meet the particular needs of this application, Owens Corning has developed DURAPINK® roofing recovery board, a line of extruded polystyrene roofing products for use with single-ply membranes, including EPDM. DURAPINK® roofing recovery board works without overlaid protection, ballast or pavers. And Owens Corning is the manufacturer of polystyrene insulation to recommend the use of its product for this application.

Consider these important characteristics of DURAPINK® recovery board:

  • Closed-cell structure means DURAPINK® roofing recovery board resists damaging effects of moisture; never rots or decays.
  • Polystyrene insulation recommended by its manufacturer for use directly under black EPDM membranes, without need for protection.
  • Lightweight, yet durable for labor-saving ease of hoisting and installation.
  • Competitively priced with other recovery boards.
  • Available in ½" and 1" thicknesses; 48" x 96" boards.
  • Approved component in UL Class A, B and C single-ply recover applications.
