Protected Roof Membrane Assemblies (PRMA)

Popular in green roofing systems, the Protected Roof Membrane Assembly (PRMA) places the insulation layer above the waterproofing membrane, an inversion of traditional roofing systems. The insulation is protected from environmental extremes, but is exposed to moisture; the natural water resistance of FOAMULAR® EPS and XPS minimizes water absorption, preserving R-value.

Ballasted Single-Ply Roof System / PRMA Steel Deck

In a PRMA (Protected Roof Membrane Assembly) Steel Deck roof system with Ballasted Single-Ply Insulation, ballast goes over a protective mat, holds the insulation in place and protects it from solar loading. The PRMA ensures a consistent moistureproof seal. Ballast, smooth 2” x 2’ x 2’ concrete pavers, water worn gravel or crushed stone, hold system in place.

In a Ballasted Waterproofing PRMA (Protected Roof Membrane Assembly) Concrete Deck roof system with Ballasted Single-Ply Insulation, a waterproof membrane goes over the concrete deck before the insulation board is installed, then ballast goes over a protective mat, holds the insulation in place and protects it from solar loading. The PRMA ensures a consistent moistureproof seal. Ballast, smooth 2” x 2’ x 2’ concrete pavers, water worn gravel or crushed stone, hold system in place.

FOAMULAR® 404 & 404 RB Extruded Polystyrene Insulation

ASTM C578 Type VI, 40 psi, 1.8 pcf density

FOAMULAR® 404 & 404 RB extruded polystyrene insulations are specially designed for use in Protected Roof Membrane Assemblies (PRMA), where the insulation is placed directly over the membrane. The compressive strength of FOAMULAR® extruded polystyrene insulation provides the integrity needed for long-term roof performance. Extruded polystyrene is the type of insulation recommended for PRMA applications. Owens Corning offers four specific types of FOAMULAR® extruded polystyrene insulation for this use: FOAMULAR® 404 and 604; and FOAMULAR® 404 RB and 604 RB. Both the 404 RB and 604 RB extruded polystyrene insulations feature drainage channels running the length of the panel. These are excellent extruded polystyrene products.

Owens Corning’s FOAMULAR® extruded polystyrene insulation is an ENERGY STAR® qualified product.

THERMAPINK® insulation has long-term thermal resistance stability compared to polyisocyanurate foam products. It also provides efficiencies during installation such as "direct-to-steel deck" with no gypsum board thermal barrier needed in most commercial single-ply and metal roofing systems.

Owens Corning’s FOAMULAR® extruded polystyrene insulation is an ENERGY STAR® qualified product. Other grades may be available with minimum order quantities.
