Delaware Technical Community College

Application

Courtyard canopy on campus of Delaware Technical Community College

Background

At the heart of the Stanton campus the courtyard is a place for students to congregate and relax. The area was underutilized by students and facility alike as there was no protection from the elements. EXTECH/ Exterior Technologies Inc. was contracted to provide a surface mount canopy system that would withstand weather extremes while remaining attractive and functional.

Challenges

The courtyard canopy was designed with laminated glass in mind. However the sleek, sweeping curves needed to be cut on the job site to form the end angles. In addition, the weight of polycarbonate sheets compared to laminated glass allowed for the elimination of cross mullions in the design. These changes allowed for enhanced aesthetics and character, and provided leak-resistant protection. Typically municipal codes for canopies require high impact, wind, and snow-load resistance making the product selection critical to the end use product.

Solution

Makrolon® UV Polycarbonate sheet

  • High impact strength
  • Building code compliance
  • Lightweight - thus reducing metal framing system
  • Light diffusing
