Astragals and Meeting Stiles

Introduction
Astragals and meeting stile gasketing products are designed to prevent air, water, dust, smoke and other elements from infiltrating into the building through the middle of the pair of doors and to stop intruders from spreading the door frame apart and gaining entrance into the building by pulling the door open. Astragals should be installed on all exterior double doors.

Double door conditions and requirements can be complex. Pemko addresses these conditions with simple and inexpensive solutions as well as more customized models, including split astragals, "T" astragals, and overlapping astragals, adjustable astragals, locking astragals and meeting stile gasketing. Each job should be carefully studied as to the specific requirements when selecting the appropriate gasketing. Note that some astragals consist of two parts, one for each door, and should be ordered accordingly.

Astragals and meeting stiles with a fire label may be mounted on pairs of doors wherein the gap meets the requirements of NFPA 80, 2-3.1.7 "The clearance between...the meeting edges of doors swinging in pairs on the pull side shall be 1/8" ± 1/16" (3.18mm ± 1.59mm) for steel doors and shall not exceed 1/8" (3.18mm) for wood doors."

Pemko offers astragals in the following finishes: mill finish aluminum (A), mill finish extruded bronze (brass) (B), bright-dip gold anodized aluminum (BDG), clear anodized aluminum (C), dark bronze anodized aluminum (D), gold anodized aluminum (G), painted white aluminum (PW) and satin nickel anodized aluminum (SN). There are also a variety of insert options, including: vinyl, PemkoPrene™, silicone, pile, neoprene, nylon brush and soft brush. NOTE: All Pemko clear anodized brush products are supplied with gray brush (available with black brush upon request). Other finishes are supplied with black brush.

The 3600 series astragals provide a superior weather barrier featuring their new self-adjusting, spring loaded bottom seal. Designed with Pemko's Advanced Technology, the 3600's are the most innovative astragals released into the market to date.

Locking Astragals with Auto-Adjusting Seal - The 3600 Series Astragal
In our continuing tradition of bringing new and innovative products to the weatherstrip industry, Pemko now offers the NEW 3600 series of spring-loaded, auto-adjusting, weatherstripped astragals with locking spring bolts for 1-3/4" residential and office suite double entrance doors. Note the special features below to see how the 3600 series astragal could be right for your doors.

Important Features:

  • Actuating mechanisms for spring bolts and bottom seal are conveniently located near center of door
  • The extruded snap-in aluminum cover plates, for strike and dead bolt, provide a firm strike mounting surface and are anodized to match the astragals. The cover plates also conceal the mounting screws and dead bolt cutout
  • Adjustable mounting blocks, for strike plates, are designed to retain their position when moved vertically in the housing. Plastic spring-leaves hold the mounting blocks in place during installation
  • Bottom boot fills gaps from 1/4" to 5/8" independently of the 1-1/16" locking bolt movement
  • Enlarged interior housing allows for stronger and more durable components, as well as
providing a larger bottom seal area
  • Pemko's precision-injection-molded acetal plastic components provide superior strength and flexibility
  • The locking mechanism has a 400% greater locking interface than previous locking astragals, for enhanced security
  • New round press-in thimble plastic strike, with tapered ribs to firmly hold it in place, is included in addition to the flat metal plate for the threshold and header

Operating Instructions
3600 series astragals have locking spring bolts. These spring bolts are operated by pushing in and sliding the bolt releases which are conveniently located near the middle of the astragal. To latch the door simply push the bolt release. The bolt will automatically spring and lock into the extended position. To retract the bolts, press the bolt releases and pull the two latching pulls toward the center of the door. The bolts will automatically latch in the retracted position.
