Innovative Smoke Containment for the Elevator Hoistway

The Smoke Guard® System is designed to temporarily seal an elevator hoistway door to resist the passage of smoke in the event of a building fire. In other words, it is a gasket for the hoistway door. The system works in conjunction with the already fire-rated elevator hoistway door to form a smoke- and draft-control assembly, which is required by code.

In contrast to other applications which may be used to satisfy this code requirement, such as additional fire doors and enclosed lobbies, the Smoke Guard® System is not only innovative–it’s revolutionary. The Smoke Guard® System screen is made of a high performance polyimide film, which does not generate flame or smoke. In an undeployed state, the screen and housing can be concealed in a ceiling or valence, providing the architect flexibility in his design concept and maximizing usable floor space. What makes the product even better is that at this time we know of no other product available in the world that can provide superior smoke sealing capabilities to the Smoke Guard® System.

Designed with medical, hospitality and multi-story residential applications in mind, Smoke Guard® System offers an aesthetically pleasing, space saving alternative to magnetic hold-open doors and enclosed vestibules.

Concealed in the ceiling or a valence, the Smoke Guard® System deploys only when smoke is detected at the hoistway. The deployed system then acts as a smoke- and draft-control assembly at the elevator hoistway door as required by the International Building Code (IBC). Since no wall space is necessary for door pockets or for hinged doors on hold opens, a minimum corridor width can be maintained. Because the hoistway door is now a fully-gasketed assembly, it can open directly onto the corridor.

Smoke- and Draft-Control Assembly. The standard elevator door is typically a 90-minute fire-rated assembly. The Smoke Guard® System is an automatic gasketing device specifically designed to work in conjunction with the elevator hoistway door assembly. Together they provide the most effective smoke- and draft-control assembly currently available.

System Deployment. As the local smoke detector in front of the elevator hoistway goes into alarm, the Smoke Guard® System will deploy only in areas where smoke is actively being detected in front of the hoistway making that environment hazardous. Should an elevator occupant, such as a firefighter or other rescue personnel, encounter a deployed system, the screen can be rewound using a rewind switch mounted directly on the screen itself. If smoke continues to be detected by the local smoke detector, the screen will redeploy to seal the hoistway opening.

Installation. The Smoke Guard® System is installed by factory recognized personnel.
The General Contractor has minimal preparation work, which primarily includes providing a clear, plumb, unobstructed wall surface at the hoistway door, 120v AC power, three wired junction boxes and a UL 268 conforming smoke detector.

On-Going Maintenance. The semi-annual cycle test performed by the owner/manager involves triggering the smoke detector in the elevator lobby and observing the deployment of the curtain. The system is easily reset by activating the rewind switch.

Warranty. The Smoke Guard® Corporation warrants that its products will be free from defects for a period of one year and will perform as stated in this literature.
