NEUTRON & GAMMA SHIELDING DOORS

Door and Frame Construction

Neutron shielding doors consist of a combination of high density or borated polyethylene and lead sheet contained in a metal or wood shell.

Special steel-clad gamma shielding doors include only lead sheet for shielding purposes. The lead is held in place by supports inside the door shell. Either type of door can be swinging or sliding in operation.

Swinging doors are pre-hung in special heavy steel frames. High-capacity, long-life hinges are furnished. Each hinge is rated for full door weight.

Frames for swinging doors are usually cast into the concrete walls of the room during initial construction. They are heavy-gage steel units, prepared for hardware prior to installation.

Designs for both types of doors are made to avoid the risk of frame or face warping caused by the high weights, larger sizes, thermal cycling, and other factors.

Power operators are recommended due to door weight and inertia. Magnetic locking devices and door interlocks are available to assure safety of operation.
Installation

The weight and size of these doors usually requires specialized installation. This is available from A & L Shielding.
