Apply over numerous surfaces
Perfect for interiors
Excellent for renovation work
Exterior
Save a ton in construction costs - Custom Brick's beauty is more than skin deep. Because it is much lighter in weight than traditional brick, there can be great savings on foundation and structural requirements needed to carry the building load. Faster construction overall. And, no nets are needed to protect passersby from falling bricks. All of which leads to safe, less costly construction.
Not your father's brick - The cost-effective design options of traditional brick are very limited. This is one contributing factor to the explosive growth in popularity of Dryvit. Now, not only can you have all the architectural details you want and are accustomed to getting with Dryvit, you can give your project a durable Custom Brick finish as well.
Energy conservation is cool - People didn't associate "brick" with "energy savings"... until now. Use the Custom Brick finish with any Dryvit system and enjoy all the benefits of additional insulation on the outside of the building where it is most effective. All this and the "traditional" look of brick, too!
No need to bend on design - Whether your project is a pool house or a palace, design is important. Custom Brick patterns can be created specifically to meet your exact need. There are virtually no limitations to size, shape, color or texture. You dream it, Dryvit Custom Brick can achieve it.
'Versatile brick' no longer an oxymoron - Custom Brick finish works great as a finish for any Dryvit system. It can also be a great finish for all types of stucco, untreated masonry and tilt-up concrete.
Renovate, Renovate, Renovate - There is nothing like a new look to spruce up an old building. Let alone a justification for raising the rent! For one or all of the above reasons, Dryvit Custom Brick is ideally suited to renovation. Have an old, infirm building? Want the old look restored? Need more curb appeal? Call Dryvit today.
Positive reinforcement - No doubt about it, traditional brick is hard - and even harder to repair. By adding or combining different weights of fiberglass reinforcing mesh, a Dryvit system can be over 7 times more impact resistant than a standard EIFS. The Custom Brick finish is extremely durable, with the added benefit of being relatively easy and inexpensive to repair if it is damaged.
Interior
Be on the inside for a change - Dryvit is not just for exteriors. Custom Brick has been used in many interesting and exciting interior applications, applied directly over properly prepared drywall and other suitable substrates. Custom Brick can provide a warm, cozy interior look without reducing living space. Although most people may think of brick as strictly an exterior product, Dryvit Custom Brick is a perfect solution for interior applications that require warmth and distinction.
Not only can Custom Brick be used to upgrade interior walls, but it can do so in a variety of colors, textures and patterns. It is a product that can give an office building or a private residence a personality all its own. Dryvit Custom Brick is cost and space efficient and easy to install quickly over standard gypsum drywall or plaster. And, of course, the virtually limitless design options add greatly to your opportunity to be creative.
The range of interior uses for the product varies as dramatically as the finish options available. Backdrops, mantels, ceilings and interior replications of exterior architecture are but a few of the effects Custom Brick has successfully achieved. Your imagination and creativity can be the guide for success on your project. While Dryvit Custom Brick can give your interiors a refreshingly new appearance, you need to know that the insulation component of a Dryvit system cannot be used on the interior of any project.

Got Brick? Break With Tradition
Each region of the country has its preferred brick sizes, colors and shapes. This is because of the regional evolution of design trends, as well as the effect of local raw materials on the colors of the finished product. With Custom Brick, there are no such limits to what is readily available. Applicators have all the tools and skills needed to apply Custom Brick; and after a short instruction session, can perform the Custom Brick application.
All the patterns shown here were created for a specific application
and are now part of our standard inventory of templates. Because Dryvit
Custom Brick patterns can be created to match virtually any brick in size
or shape, it can accommodate the architect's existing design for almost
any project. Challenge usif we don't have the design, color or
texture you want, create one; and we will match it for you. That's why
we call it Custom Brick. So, even if the building design is "complete,"
it may not be too late to contemplate the savings that Custom Brick can
provide.
Case Histories
A Diamond in the RoughArcanum Second National Bank
Three years ago, this landmark building in a suburb of Dayton, OH, could hardly be called an architectural gem. The once-dramatic windows had long ago been filled in. Every few years or so the old brick bank got a new coat of paint, but now it seemed that all 12 layers were simultaneously beginning to peel. The time had come for a complete and expensive (so it was thought!) facelift. The bank decided it wanted the original look restored.
They got quotes for the needed sandblasting and tuckpointing that would be needed to affect the dramatic change. To their dismay, the quotes were very high, and the necessary work would require the closing of the bank for many days.
Enter Ted Nealeigh and Sons Plastering of Greenville, OH. This creative company stepped in with a solution: Dryvit's Outsulation® system with a Custom Brick finish. The proposed Dryvit alternate came in approximately $85,000 lower than the original restoration bid. To complement surrounding buildings, Nealeigh selected the
Used Wall Brick pattern along with two custom colors for the grout and
finish itself. "In the end, the bank chose the Dryvit system because it
was the better choice..." said Dustin Nealeigh, the actual designer of
the solution.
All in all, 5300 square feet of Dryvit and Custom Brick finish were
used to complete this job. The system was installed directly over the existing
painted masonry using standard adhesive in combination with mechanical
fasteners. The installation took only 3-1/2 weeks with no disruption of
the bank's day-to-day activities. The building is now better insulated
than it previously had been. Best of all, the architectural details of
the original building (except for the window glass) have been restored,
and the Second National Bank of Arcanum is once again a gem.
Meeting the ChallengeMarriott Residence Inn
The original design for this Marriott Residence Inn in Salt Lake City, UT, called for a brick facade. However, both the budget and the construction schedule were extremely tight. Involved parties were summoned back to the planning table and challenged to lower the costs yet maintain the design.
Enter Dryvit. In this case, the additional challenge was to match the Custom Brick finish to existing brick used in the surrounding area. To do this, Dryvit obtained samples of the "local" brick, which contains black and white flecks, and duplicated this effect by adding colored quartz aggregate to the Custom Brick finish. Next, a template pattern was selected which matched the original design for the brick itself.
Using Custom Brick saved the owner in excess of $200,000 by eliminating the heavier footings and framing needed for traditional brick. In addition, money was saved by reducing the amount of time needed to build the Inn. The owner, Woodbury Associates, has stated that they are "extremely pleased with the appearance of the Custom Brick finish." Another satisfied customer!
There were additional benefits to using Dryvit Custom Brick on this project. First, by eliminating the traditional brick, a single contractor installed the entire wall system. This offered less scheduling headaches for the General Contractor as well as a single source of responsibility for both the material and the labor involved in the exterior wall system.
Second, by eliminating the traditional brick, there was no longer a need for an expansion joint between dissimilar materials in this wall. That eliminated a maintenance item for Marriott as well as a potential source for moisture intrusion.
Dryvit and traditional brick have always provided a pleasing, complementary appearance when used together. Now, as evidenced by this Marriott Residence Inn, the best of both worlds is possible with Dryvit!
A Practical Weight Loss PlanVanderbilt University
Like many venerable institutions of higher learning, Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, has a design preference for red brick. Most of the buildings on the original campus date back to its founding in 1873. Today, as in the past, any new design must pass stringent review, and most still utilize this traditional medium.
However, new challenges to design exist today that were not factors 125 years ago. The recent modifications the Patricia Frist Annex posed were just such a challenge.
In 1873, HVAC screen walls were not needed because there wasn't a whole lot of equipment that needed to be located on the roof of the building. When new HVAC equipment was installed on the roof of the Frist Annex, however, the contractor was asked to hide it from view. Further, he was told that such a screen wall needed to both match the building's brick exterior perfectly AND be light enough to be placed on the roof.
Naturally, because of its weight, traditional brick could not be considered for this use. Enter Dryvit Custom Brick.
The screen wall was constructed using Dryvit Outsulation and a Custom Brick finish that was specially formulated to match the original walls of the building. A special stone cap, matching that of the roof band on the Annex, is used on top of the screen wall for design unity. "It's really hard to tell the difference between the screen wall with the Custom Brick finish and the rest of the building, even up close," said David Liddle of Liddle Brothers Contractors, the Dryvit applicator on the job.
For David Miller, AIA of Earl Swensson Associates, Inc, matching the Custom Brick finish to the existing brick was the biggest hurdle. However, Miller had confidence in Dryvit to solve his design problem.
"We had used this product before and have had good response and positive experience with the use," said Miller. "Ultimately, we had a comfort level with the ability of Custom Brick to meet the needs of this project."
