Ultra/R®

DESCRIPTION
Ultra/R® is a rigid, non-structural polyisocyanurate foam insulation board with protective facers of foil laminate on both sides. It is available in many thicknesses, sizes and R-values to meet particular insulation requirements. Contains no CFC’s.

Also available with kraft facer one side (Ultra/kraft) for applications requiring a nonreflective facer.

USES

Ultra/R® Insulating Sheathing is for use in residential or commercial construction with wood or metal framing to provide additional insulation for the following exterior sidings: Brick or wood, hardboard, aluminum and vinyl sidings which are fastened to the wood or metal frame through the sheathing. Where building codes require a 15-minute thermal barrier, apply 1/2" gypsum wallboard to sidewall interiors. Combining 3/4 " thick Ultra/R® in conventional 2 x 4 sidewall framing, 3-1/2" fiberglass and finish siding provides an insulated wall system in excess of R/19.

FIRE TEST RESULTS

Ultra/R®: 1/2" thick (12.7 mm)
Flame Spread: 20
Smoke Density: 40

Ultra/R®: 4" thick (101.6 mm)
Flame Spread: 25
Smoke Density: 250

These numerical values are rounded to the nearest five and not intended to reflect hazards presented by this material under actual fire conditions. Faculty mutual audit inspection and re-examination program relates only to the above.

*The 1/2" (12.7 mm) specimen was supported using 1/4" steel rods and 2" galvanized hexagonal wire per ASTM E-84 standard mounting methods.

WARNING – Polyisocyanurate (an organic material) will decompose above 450° F and will ignite and burn at 600° F to 700° F or when exposed to open flame. Therefore, Ultra/R® should not be used in exposed applications.

"R" means resistance to heat flow. The higher the "R" the greater the insulating value. To get the marked "R" value, it is essential that this insulation be installed properly. Follow the instructions carefully.

GENERAL CONSTRUCTION DATA

To get the rated R-value, it is essential that Ultra/R® insulating sheathing be protected on site from inclement weather by storing indoors or on a dry platform under shelter. Keep wrapped in packaging until ready for use. If no shelter is available stack panels on skids 8" above grade and cover with polyfilm or other device. Panels must be installed in a dry condition only.

Ultra/R® sheathing over framing
A. Install an acceptable corner brace system using bracing of either metal strapping or let in wood.
B. Install Ultra/R® panels vertically with long edges in light contact with adjacent panel. Ensure solid backing on all four edges. Nail with galvanized roofing nails (3/8" heads) of sufficient length to penetrate framing a minimum of 3/4". Nail 8" o.c. around all edges and 12" o.c. through the field.
C. Use a utility knife and straight-edge to cut Ultra/R® to fit irregular wall angles or projections.
D. Apply finish siding in accordance with siding manufacturer’s recommendation for proper installation.

NOTE: Install a 4 or 6 mil polyethylene vapor barrier according to local building codes or as climate conditions warrant, on the interior wall framing under 1/2" gypsum wallboard.

Ultra/R® Sheathing as Gypsum Underlayment
A. Follow steps B and C above.
B. Seal all interior sheathing joints and penetrations with aluminized tape to maintain optimum vapor barrier effectiveness of the wall system.
C. Apply a minimum 1/2" thick gypsum wallboard over the installed and sealed Ultra/R®. Stagger joints, nailing 8" o.c. on all studs, top and bottom plates.

Ultra/R® Sheathing as Interior Masonry Wall Insulation
A. Install Ultra/R® to the masonry wall and apply furring strips over Ultra/R®, spacing a maximum of 24" o.c., fastening through to the masonry wall.
B. Follow steps B and C of Ultra/R® Sheathing as Gypsum Underlayment.

Ultra/R® Sheathing as Cavity Wall Insulation
Install Ultra/R® in 16" or 24" widths between wall ties and attach with masonry fasteners to masonry wall.

Ultra/R® Sheathing as Concrete Slab Insulation
Install a minimum 4 mil polyethylene vapor barrier over level, dry compacted fill. Place Ultra/R® over vapor barrier below reinforcement steel and then pour concrete slab.
