Structural Steel Primers

Sumter Coatings offers a broad array of structural steel primers to meet the varied demands of those specifying coatings for steel structures.

Sumter Coatings' Heavy Duty Inhibitive Primers (99 Series) are anti-corrosive, zinc fortified alkyd primers that provide extended protection for projects fabricated in stages. These primers pass 500 hours salt spray and meet or exceed SSPC Paint No. 25, SSPC Paint No. 15 and MPI and Federal Specifications in the specific class. They contain no heavy metals and are VOC and HAPS compliant. 99 Series Heavy Duty Primers can be welded-through without compromising the weld's integrity as tested in an independent laboratory. These primers have been tested and approved as providing satisfactory inter-coat adhesion when top-coated with both spray applied fireproofing and intumescent coatings. 99 Series Heavy Duty Primers are our highest rated and provide the lowest applied cost in their class.

Sumter Coatings' Universal Primers are fast drying, rust inhibitive and are designed to protect steel and iron substrates from corroding prior to erection. They are VOC and HAPS compliant and contain no heavy metals. These Universal Primers are formulated to accept high performance top coats such as epoxies, polyurethanes, lacquers and acrylics, which may contain strong solvents, without fear of lifting the primer. These primers meet or exceed the performance requirements of SSPC Paint No. 25, SSPC Paint No. 15, TT-P-636 and TT-P-664D. Sumter Coatings' Universal Primers pass 500 hours salt spray resistance.

Sumter Coatings' Inhibitive Shop Coat Primers (77 Series) and Structural Shop Coat Primers (0984 and 0985)are medium duty primers designed for the project requiring shorter exposure times in mild industrial environments. These primers may be welded-through with no affect on the weld's integrity as determined through independent laboratory testing. These primers have been tested and approved for use under many of the leading brands of fire resistant coatings. These primers meet or exceed the performance requirements of SSPC Paint No. 15 and are VOC and HAPS compliant.

Sumter Coatings' Zinc Rich Primers, Enviro-Zinc 97 Inorganic and Enviro-Zinc Epoxy Organic are formulated to provide superior protection for steel exposed to highly corrosive environments. Enviro-Zinc 97 Inorganic Zinc Rich Primer complies with SSPC Paint NO. 20 Type I and meets class B slip coefficient and creep resistance requirements, ASTM A-325 or A-490 Bolt Specification, Appendix A. Enviro-Zinc Epoxy Organic Zinc Rich Primer complies with SSPC Paint No. 20 Type II and meets class A slip coefficient and creep resistance requirements, ASTM A-325 or A-490 bolt Specification, Appendix A.

Sumter Coatings' Enviro-Pox 949High Build Epoxy Mastic Primer/Finish is a high quality coating for use over steel, galvanized metal, aluminum and concrete. Its' surface tolerant characteristics allow for application over marginally prepared surfaces. Its' high solids and mastic properties permit this coating to build mils on, and protect, sharp corners edges and welds. A high perm rating affords additional protection from attack by moisture. This coating meets the performance requirements of SSPC Paint No. 22.

Sumter Coatings' Water-Based Primers (196 Series) offer good protection for steel in mild industrial environments where exposure times will be shorter. These primers are low odor and do not possess many of the hazards, such as flash point, associated with solvent-based primers. 196 Series primers exhibit universal properties as they can be top coated with coatings containing strong solvents, such as epoxies and polyurethanes, without fear of lifting the primer.
