4-POST HYBRID SHELVING
1. PRODUCT PRESENTATION
A pioneer devoted to high-density mobile shelving storage system solutions, Montel Inc. introduces its newly USPTO patented flexible and innovative hybrid 4-Post shelving system, the SmartShelf™ (US PATENT NO.: 6 814 245).

Designed to be the most adaptable storage shelving system in the industry, the SmartShelf can be configured and reconfigured at any time to satisfy changing storage needs and space availability, enabling the possibility to anticipate potential storage needs. For storing objects of various heights, shelves are adjustable by 1” increments with hooks for lighter objects, or by 1 1/2” increments with supports for heavier objects. In the same section, hooks and supports can be used together.

The SmartShelf offers an innovative feature that consists of the only storage system that can be configured as a full-depth or back-to-back system, or a combination of both. For storing large objects of various lengths, full-depth shelves can be used while back-to-back shelves can be used for smaller objects.

Developed to optimize space capacity, the SmartShelf exceeds the shelving system industry standards. Wanting to allow more storage capacity than any other system, the SmartShelf provides additional linear storage capacity of ¾” per shelf. Available in 39 3/8” wide sections, the SmartShelf stores perfectly three archive boxes without loosing space capacity.

The SmartShelf is a user-friendly easy to install storage product. No tools are required to assemble, remove, or reconfigure the shelves. In addition, the full-depth double-side shelves can be put in or taken out without moving or taking off the shelves above or below. For fixed units only, each post shall have an integrated leveler which allows for 3/4” adjustment to accommodate for uneven floor surface.

3. ASSEMBLY & INSTALLATION
Assembly and installation of the SmartShelf is completed on site under the supervision of a factory trained Montel local authorized dealer. Contact Montel or your local authorized dealer for details on assembly and installation.

5. MATERIALS & FINISHES
Materials of the SmartShelf shall be the finest of their respective kinds and those best adapted to the assembly for which they are employed to meet ISO 9002 quality standards. All steel shall be the best mild, cold rolled, pickled, and double annealed, free from scale and buckle. All plating used on exposed parts shall be metallic furniture stock. All gauges are U.S. standard. The design of all parts shall be such that the completed installation shall present a neat and finished appearance and shall be free from exposed sharp edges or projections.

All steel parts shall be smoothly made, and thoroughly cleaned by a process of washing completely in a phosphatizing solution to insure removal of oil, grease or other foreign material which in any way would interfere with the adhesion of the priming coat. Following the cleaning process, all parts shall be coated by spraying, assuring that every part in thoroughly and completely covered with fine baking enamel, or powder coat and baked to the manufacturer’s paint recommendation meeting ISO 9002 quality standards. The finish for baked enamel shall be medium gloss, giving a reading of 50 to 60 degrees on a standard gloss meter and must be capable of withstanding severe hammer and bending tests without flaking. Final finish shall be a minimum of 1.2 mil thickness capable of resisting acetic acid, household ammonia, 10% lye, alcohol, salt spray, abrasion and printing, and all normal usage resistant requirements of a good finish.

The finish for epoxy-polyester hybrid powder coat shall be a minimum 2.5 mil thickness capable of resisting the same test than the baked enamel coating described previously.

Furthermore, powder coat shall not be off gassing to prevent deterioration of collection and other great value books.

6. TECHNICAL SUPPORT
The technical information presented hereafter is an overview of the specifications for the 4-Post hybrid shelving products. For your specific project planning and service needs, we recommend contacting Montel or your local authorized dealer for an assessment of your storage needs. Specifications subject to change.

Upright Frames:

Upright frames are made of two or more cross members mechanically assembled without screws or rivets to join the top and bottom (and center if necessary) of the post and form a rectangular upright frame. The post is made of 16-gauge 1 1/4” x 1 1/2” rectangular shaped cold rolled steel. The post is slotted on each side at every one inch increment. The slots are 3/16” wide x 5/8” long and are designed to accommodate a variety of shelf and roll-out drawer configurations. The back of the post is also slotted at every 1 1/2” increments. Posts are made of two rows of slots, side by side from top to bottom. Slots are 3/16” wide x 5/8” long, including 3/8” between the two rows. These slots are made of 16-gauge steel folded in a “U” shape channel at both ends with an integral safety “keeper” to the same time. Thus the uprights must allow for component integration on either 1” or 1 1/2” increments depending only on the selected shelf component.

Cross Members:

Cross members are 4” high x 1/2” wide. They are made of 16-gauge steel folded to create a “U” shape channel. At both ends, hook type design allows to snap the cross members in both rows of slots at the same time. In seismic zones, the cross members are welded to the post.

Levelers for Fixed Units Only:

Each post shall have an integrated leveler which allows for 3/4” adjustment to accommodate for uneven floor surface. No temporary shims or other third party leveling device will be accepted.

Center Back Panel [Optional on Double Face Sections]:

Center back panels are made of 20-gauge steel and constructed in such a way as to form and integral finished product.

Full Back Panel [Optional for Single Sections]:

Full back panels are made of 20-gauge steel box formed ½” thick and affixed to the post to form an integral finished product.

Supported Type:

• Full-depth shelves: Full-depth shelves are made of box rolled formed 22 gauge steel, with “Four Bend” 3/4” edge construction which adds additional strength and capacity as well as it creates a hidden safety edge to protect people and items. The full-depth shelves are supported by two longitudinal shelf supports and the appropriate number reinforcement channels. Shelves are also available in 18-gauge steel as an option.
• Longitudinal supports: [3/4” high supports] or [1 1/4” high supports for heavy duty application] are made of one “U” shaped 12-gauge steel channel. A standard formed steel claw is welded at each end to form a complete support. These supports are inserted into the slots located at the back of the post.
• Front-to-back reinforcement channels: [3/4” high reinforcement channels] or [1 1/4” high reinforcement channels for heavy duty application] are made of 12 gauge steel formed in a “U” shaped channel and are sitting on the longitudinal shelf supports.
• Base support: A 12-gauge steel special “U” shaped channel is provided for the bottom shelf. The support is inserted at the bottom of each post and anchored to the floor or to the carriage, in compliance with seismic standards.

Hooked Type:

• All shelves and canopy tops shall be constructed of minimum 18-gauge steel and clipped on the uprights. Welded reinforcement can be added to accept heavier loads. Shelves floating on support are unacceptable.
• All shelving shall be back-to-back shelves and shall have capability of being adjusted without use of tools. Canopy tops required on all sections.
• All shelves shall be adjustable on 1” centers along the entire height of upright.
• Maximum deflection under load; must maintain L/180 based on a uniform distributed load of 50 pounds per square foot.

Sway Brace (Required with Hooked Type):

1 1/8” wide sway braces are made of two 16-gauge steel bars, assembled with a rivet. Sway braces are connected to the posts by means of mechanical rivet or dowel pins. Sway braces are positioned where needed on taller shelving sections to add lateral stability.

End Panels:

Shall be constructed of 18-gauge steel, 1 3/8” thick, they are bolted to bottom and top upright cross members.

Side Closure Panels:

Shall be constructed of 20-gauge steel, they are formed to be flush with the edge of the shelving upright and bolted to bottom and top upright cross members.

Plain Back Stops (Single Entry):

Shall be 5 17/32” high formed of 20-gauge steel with a 3/8” bend on top and bottom and a 1 3/16” bend on each side.

Slotted Back Stops (Single Entry):

Shall be 5 17/32” high formed of 20-gauge steel with a 3/8” bend on top and bottom and a 1 3/16” bend on each side. Slots are located on 1” increments for divider adjustment.

Plain Center Stops (Double Entry):

Shall be 4 3/16” high formed of 20-gauge steel with offsets bends to center on upright frame.

Slotted Center Stops (Double Entry):

Shall be 4 3/16” high formed of 20-gauge steel with two offset bends. Slots are located on 1” increments for divider adjustment.

File Dividers:

Shall be formed of 20-gauge steel with one lug at the top rear and two lugs on the bottom to engage slots in the shelf for easy adjustment on 1” horizontal centers. The front top corner of the divider is rounded with an approximate 2” radius.

Sliding Reference Shelf:

Shall be 11” deep by 30” wide, made of 20-gauge steel reinforced on each side with steel angles to secure slides. Shall operate on double extension ball bearing slides equipped with rubber bumpers on each end of travel. The assembly is securely attached to underneath the storage shelf, flush with the front edge.

7. CODES & CERTIFICATIONS

Carriages, controls, wiring and wire raceways, and electrical hinged front panels are pre-assembled at the factory to facilitate and ensure quality of installation, thus exceeding UL and CSA regulations. Electrical systems are always thoroughly tested by industrial certified research centers and independent laboratories. Finally, Montel is ISO 9001 certified.

Subject to the conditions stated below, Montel warrants to the original purchaser and for the first installation that the equipment manufactured by it will be free from defects in materials and workmanship:

LIFETIME LIMITED WARRANTY: for the lifetime of the shelving structural frames.

If, within each of the warranty period as indicated above, any equipment shall be proved to Montel's satisfaction to be so defective, such equipment shall be repaired or replaced at the option of Montel.

All warranty service for any equipment manufactured by Montel must be approved by an authorized Montel factory representative. This warranty shall not apply to equipment repaired by any party other than an authorized Montel representative or to defects or damage caused by acts of God or other circumstances beyond Montel's control, improper installation (unless installation was by authorized Montel installer), improper electrical supply or environmental conditions, improper operation, maintenance or storage, or other than normal use or service. This warranty shall be void if any portion of the purchase price shall be due but unpaid in accordance with the terms pursuant to which the equipment was sold.

EXCEPT FOR THE EXPRESS WARRANTIES SET FORTH ABOVE, MONTEL MAKES NO WARRANTIES, IMPLIED OR OTHERWISE, AND MONTEL SPECIFICALLY DISCLAIMS ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

LIMITATION OF LIABILITY: Repair or replacement of any defective equipment, or refund of the purchase price paid by the customer in the event Montel determines such equipment cannot be repaired or replaced, shall be the customer's exclusive remedy for breach of the warranty for product defects, however caused, and in no case shall Montel be liable for incidental, consequential, special or other damages, or loss of profits or revenues whether as a result of breach of contract or warranty, Montel's negligence, or otherwise. Montel shall have no liability for any advice or assistance rendered by any party outside the scope of Montel's written specifications for the manufacture, operation or maintenance of the warranted equipment.

8. ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
The 4-Post hybrid shelving products are manufactured to meet and exceed environmental standards and provide a long useful life. For its 100% fully recyclable product components, Montel uses powder coat paint, which is durable and non-off gassing. Montel uses low V.O.C. (Volatile Organic Compound) paints to reduce air pollution thus releasing negligible and the lowest emissions of V.O.C. possible. The waste from our coating operation is recyclable and collected for treatment according to government and state regulations.

10. OPERATION & MAINTENANCE
Montel’s SmartShelf 4-Post shelving system is designed for no special maintenance. Simply keep it clean and respect the system capacity. Dust with a soft cloth at regular interval as required. If heavier cleaning is required use an all purpose household cleaner. DO NOT USE AMMONIA OR HARSH DETERGENTS.
