Teak Furniture – Elegance for Outdoors
Expertly crafted. Our furniture starts with only the choicest cuts of Premium Teak™ --straight, smooth, and free of knots—the best-quality wood available. The wood is kiln-dried for optimum water content, eliminating future shrinkage and expansion. Then each section is hand-fitted with snug mortise-and-tenon joinery that remains solid year after year.
Trouble Free. Because everything is test-fitted before shipping, reassembly on site is quick. Most pieces can be put together in less than 20 minutes. Once in place, our Premium Teak furniture requires virtually no maintenance and can be left outdoors year round.
Environmentally Sound. All our teak is ecologically grown on Javanese tree farms reforested on a 40-year cycle. These plantations are managed by a government agency that permits the harvesting of only mature trees, supervises reseeding, and encourages villagers to grow crops for their personal use. We import no gray-market wood that comes from threatened forests.
Maintenance of Teak Furniture
Left to the elements, teak weathers to a soft dove gray. Most owners of teak furniture prefer this subtle shift in color, which enables the wood to blend into natural surroundings. (Teak kept indoors, particularly in public settings, will darken slightly to repeated human touch, rendering the original color all the richer.) For those who like to retain the warm golden brown color of new teak in outdoor settings, we offer a range of teak care products as accessories. Penetrating oil finish preserves the original color of the wood and helps to protect your furniture from spills, UV radiation, and mildew. We recommend reapplication at least twice a year, otherwise the wood will weather.
Once teak wood has weathered, mold and mildew can be removed by scrubbing the affected areas with a four-to-one solution of water and chlorine bleach. While this mixture will lighten the wood where it is applied, in time the teak will weather again to a uniform hue. To remove stains from teak, or to return a weathered piece to its original finish, use a cleaner intended specifically for teak. Note that teak cleaner should under no circumstances be used on new wood, as it may cause damage to the wood's natural protective coating. Light sanding will remove any scratches or minor stains.
We do not recommend painting or varnishing teak furniture. Paint may not adhere properly due to teak's high oil content, and varnish requires constant maintenance to prevent cracking and peeling. Stain may be applied to teak, however, to match surrounding decor, although regular maintenance is a must.
Can teak furniture be stained?
Teak may be stained in any color you choose, but bear in mind that the extreme density and high oil content of the wood can inhibit stain from permeating; several coats may be required. The color of the stained wood, if left outdoors, will alter in response to sunlight and moisture, so stain may have to be reapplied periodically to retain the desired hue. Of course, stained teak that is kept indoors and out of direct sunlight will keep its tone longer.
Commercial Warranty
Our teak and metal furniture is built to stand up to daily use, within reasonable limits. It carries an extraordinary satisfaction guarantee. All Smith and Hawken Trade items are sold with a three-year limited warranty covering material and workmanship for commercial applications. An independent testing laboratory tests all of our furniture products in order to ensure that they exceed the most stringent industry standards as specified by BIFMA.
Why Smith & Hawken teak?
Teak's impressive résumé—favored by shipbuilders in days past, now the unrivaled choice for outdoor furniture—testifies to its merits: The dense, oil-rich grain offers a frontline defense against moisture, rendering teak resistant to rot, warping, and buckling. And its appearance only improves with age as the outer layer cures to a silvery gray that protects the wood beneath and blends into the garden palette.
Teak furniture from Smith & Hawken has a few further advantages that you won't find elsewhere. All of our teak carries an extraordinary satisfaction guarantee, and it is ecologically farmed on the island of Java. And assembly is a snap. Our craftsmen hand-fit all pieces to create snug mortise-and-tenon joints that rainwater can't penetrate, and since everything is fitted together in the workshop before shipping, reassembly on site is quick and simple.
As one of the leading importers of teak furniture in the U.S., we have amassed more than 25 distinctive styles, some descended from historical designs, others of more recent vintage. Befitting teak's longevity, we rarely phase out our designs—so if in a few years you decide to add a matching armchair, you'll know where to find it. Best of all, the majority of our pieces are in stock right now and can be shipped to you right away.
A guarantee on teak? Really?
Teak is as well suited to the making of outdoor furniture as it was to the decks of clipper ships, where it faced years of salt spray and equatorial sunlight without falling apart. Crafted like any heirloom, our teak furniture doesn't need to be covered, coddled, or stored every time it rains or snows, and will stand the test of time—a promise we back with absolute confidence, plus our guarantee of customer satisfaction.
What's involved in assembly of Smith & Hawken furniture?
While some of our teak furniture arrives fully assembled, most will be delivered in four or five partially assembled sections. Because all pieces are put together in the workshop prior to shipping to adjust tolerances, reassembly on-site is quick and straightforward. Holes line up exactly; all hardware fits. Following the clear instructions and diagrams, most pieces can be put together in less than 20 minutes using a screwdriver and included hex nut wrench (if necessary) and mallet for the dowels. (Dried to an extremely low moisture content, these actually expand and tighten inside the joint—so the finished piece stays rock solid over time.)
